Alejandro Escovedo<Austin, TX> (a,BA) Arrive early for BA. The band has no problem with unobtrusive mic stands, but the venue may. BA may be dependent on venue too.

Allman Brothers Band<Macon, GA> (a) If you ever have problems getting your equipment in the door, tell security that Kirk West, their road manager, has given you his personal permission to tape. American Horse<Dallas, TX> (a,BA) DAT BA OK, no video. This new band is comprised of the remaining members of Jackopierce.

Amos Moses<Baton Rouge, LA> (a,BA), but ask early if you want BA.

Anal C*nt<?, MA> (a,v) They allow (d)aud and video, but don't have their own soundman, so BA is not a sure thing. Beware, if the singer is in one of his famous drunken blackouts, stay away from him.

Ancient Harmony<Atlanta, GA> (a,v,BA) This Allman Bros influenced jam band encourages high quality taping of their shows and welcomes newbies too! Board access is a possibility so get there early. Anders Osborne<New Orleans, LA> (a,BA?) taper friendly. His new band includes Kirk Joseph, Mark McGrain, Carlo Nuccio, Theresa Andersson and of course, Anders himself. The band's policy is "anything goes." If the soundman gives you a hard time, tell the road manager: "Ruth (the manager) said to help me get set up, when you have a chance." Angie Aparo<Atlanta, GA> (a,BA) audience taping, mic stands OK. He loves tapers! His mic is super hot, so attenuators are needed.

The Apples In Stereo<Denver, CO> (a) They encourage daud taping, with BA being venue dependent but possible if you get there early. All they ask is that you send them a copy.

Apricot Jam<Portland, OR> (a,v,BA) They allow audio and video taping, and also allow soundboard patches whenever possible. In fact, they *highly* encourage tapers of any kind (DAT, ana, SVHS, video, etc.) to come to their shows. Their soundman is named Dave Hall <dav_hal@hotmail.com>, and if you show up early enough to talk with him, it'll make it easier to deal with the technical details. Copies for them are not required, but they very much appreciate any copies which come from taping their shows. Athenaeum<Greensboro, NC> (a) Relatively taper friendly, or at least their engineer is. Former house man at Amos' in Charlotte, NC; however, since the recording contract with Atlantic took effect, no BA is permitted: Mic's only. Gerry, their engineer, can be very helpful. Baaba Seth<Charlottesville,VA> (a,v,BA) They allow and encourage taping of all types, just as long as they can have a copy. They play all up and down the East Coast. Ball<Hollywood, CA> (a) This is Brian Tichy's (Pride & Glory, Slash's Snakebit, Steve Salas, Foreigner inspired) band; although they usually don't allow taping, on occasion they have allowed tapers to tape with prior permission. Banyan<Los Angeles, CA> (a,v,BA) Stephen Perkins' jazz/rock supergroup, they encourage taping of all sorts.

BASSOLOGY<New Haven, CT> (a,v,BA) This band encourages all forms of taping. Just make sure you let the people at the venue know that the band says it's okay. Beausoleil<?> (a) They recently allowed folks to openly tape them at a free festival (Taste of DC Festival). More info is needed because a couple of years ago Michael Doucet was reported to be quite anti-taper.

Bela Fleck & The Flecktones<Nashville, TN> (a) but it depends on the venue; talk to the soundman before the show. He will usually ask you to set up near the soundboard or at the back of the hall. Big Head Todd & the Monsters<Boulder? or Denver?, CO> (a) They allowed open mic stand taping at several Spring 1998 shows, and their engineer gave the tapers copies of his setlist, so taping does appear to be permitted. No board access. Video is almost certainly prohibited. Photography uncertain.

The Big Wu<Minneapolis, MN> (a,BA) They allow aud DAT, board patches and SBD/mic mixes out of archivist Paul Hagen's DA-P1.

Bill Miller<?> (a) This native-American singer/songwriter not only allows daud taping, but encourages it. His SBD policy is unknown. He's a very open and nice guy. His web page is at: "http://www.billmiller.net"

Black Crowes<Atlanta, GA> (a) Taper fiendly band that encourages their fans to audio record any performance from their seat for personal, non-commercial, home use. The band does a good job of informing the venues of this policy. Analog\DAT\consumer\pro equipment are welcome, although mic stands have been venue dependent on the recent tour. No SBD access, so bring your mics. Under no circumstances is power available. Please stay out of the way of the crew at all venues, and respect those around you so that everyone has a good time. In particular, please do not set up mic stands directly in front of the soundboard. If you see someone setting up a stand right in front of the board, please educate them kindly. Black Label Society<?> (a,v) Zakk Wylde's new band, it has the same taping policy as Zakk Wylde. He is the former guitarist from Ozzy. Fans can record Black Label Society's performances for the private personal use. Audio and Video audience recordings are encouraged, but SBD access will not be available. Trading is ok, but selling is not. Zakk has asked that you send a copy to their official archivist, Randy Canis <700083@fs3.law.missouri.edu> so they can keep track of what's out there. Please do not put your recordings online in any format. There may be limitations based on venue and other bands, so check with them ahead of time to minimize problems. Black '47<NYC> (a,BA) Their lead singer, Larry Kirwin, encourages taping. Get permission in advance for aud or BA. Talk to the soundman at least a half hour before the show and promise them a copy in return.

Blindman's Holiday<Ithaca, NY> (a) This band no longer exists as of 12/96.

Blissninnies<Santa Cruz, CA> (a,BA) DAT aud OK, for BA, ask early. They are very cool about folks taping them. One of the band members, Nick, contacted me and said "people are welcome to tape us anytime." You can contact Nick at <mooshie@earthlink.net>

Blonde Redhead<?, New York> (a) Ask for audience recordings as they are into the lo-fi sound. Video? Mic stands?

Bloodkin<Athens GA> (a,BA) They are flattered by folks doing daud tapes, and have no problem with BA, as long as its under their control. If you run into any problems with the venue, insist that they talk to Danny Hutchens (lead singer) or Eric Carter (lead guitar), who will help smooth over any problems. They will be tickled pink if you offer to forward them a copy of the show.

The Blotter Boys<various> (a,BA) This band, made up of Vassar Clements, Buddy Cage (New Riders of the Purple Sage), Sammy Piazza (Hot Tuna), and Boyd Albrition (Quicksilver Messenger Service) allow board access and DAUD.

Blue Dixie<St. Louis, MO> (a,v,BA) They allow all forms of taping, including DAT BA and video BA, but get there early.

The Blue Dogs<Virginia Beach, VA> (a,BA) mic stands OK, DAT BA OK. Features Doug Wannamaker formerly of Indecision and the Gib Droll Band.

The Blueground Undergrass<Atlanta, GA> (a,BA) The Rev. Mosier's new band encourages all kinds of taping, but their video policy is unknown. The Reverend and the sound man Jay both appreciate copies. They are all nice folks and easy to get along with. The wife of Kirk West, ABB road mngr, is managing this band. At the cd release party on Jan 29, 1999 there were several people daisy chained off the board, as well as folks running their own mics. Blue Honey<Portland, OR> (a,BA) They are VERY open to taping and encourage it at their shows. They allow BA, but since they have no definite soundperson, you should ask first. If Andrew is running the board, DAT BA is definitely welcome. They also welcome AUD and AUD/BA mixes, but cannot always provide a matrix, so your own gear may be necessary. The band would be very grateful for a copy of the show, DAT or analog, so they can continue their archiving effort. The Blue Meanies<Chicago, IL> (a,v,BA) Now that the Canadian Blue Meanies have changed their name to "The New Meanies", the original Blue Meanies out of Chicago are continuing to offer board access, video and daud taping, provided it's for personal use or trade. Blue Miracle<College Park, MD> (a,BA) At the Groovefest in Columbia, MD on 5/24/98 they allowed DAT BA. Talk to them before the show and send them a copy afterwards.

Blue Mountain<Oxford, MS> (a,BA) For BA, talk to the band early.

Blues Traveler<NYC> (a) They allow daud taping, but not video or BA. A recent fiasco with a video-taper has caused them to be wary of board patches. Bo Mahoney, their new soundman is a nice guy and will help you all he can. The practice of the soundman approaching you and allowing a board patch has been suspended indefinitely. If you have any trouble with the venue security, ask to talk to Bo Mahoney, their soundman and he'll help you.

The Bobs<?> (a) DAUD OK. Video and SBD policy unclear. They've been very friendly toward tapers in the past may even joke with you about splittin' the profits. Good natured folks.

The Bohemian Swingers<Tampa, FL> (a) They will generally allow aud taping, but ask first.

Boiled In Lead<Minneapolis, MN> (a) Ask for permission, you'll probably get it. They're likely to want a copy of your tape.

Bottle Rockets<Festus, MO> (a,BA) Bottle Rockets are off Atlantic and on Doolittle now (1/99). There have been sbd tapes made since the Doolittle signing but it's unclear if that's an official policy or an occasional thing.

Box Set<San Francisco, CA> (a,BA) BA depends on venue and situation. Their sound engineer, Jason, sets up a real sweet mix for you. Expect two sets, two 60 meter tapes or one 90meter per show.

Brad<Seattle, WA> (a) This band, made up of members from Pearl Jam and Satchel, has no problem with you taping them, but venue restrictions may apply. No BA.

brain_crab<Hudson Valley, NY> (a,v,BA) They are an ambient, pro-taping band.

Brian Setzer Orchestra<?> (a) Although their official taping policy has yet to be clarified, a fellow DAT taper was able to daud tape them and trade the tape with BSO's soundman, who seemed genuinely pleased that he taped them. Further info is needed.

*Brother Project<Buffalo, NY>. (a,v,BA) They allow board access but due to the small venues feel that audience taping would generally be better in most places. Just talk to the guys and they'll be very helpful. Digital, video, everything goes!

Brother Thump<Philadelphia/Manayunk, PA> (a,v,BA) DAT BA OK. Taping is encouraged. Just show up and they will accomodate you. Speak to Mike Sanfosso (lead guitar) or Jordan Marion (guitar tech/ roadie). Kim Kline, the person in charge of their mailing list, will also relay messages to the band for you. Brown<Tom's River, NJ> (a), BA if soundman is in a good mood

*Bruce Hornsby<Williamsburg, VA> (a,BA?) There have been recent (4/99) reports that the soundman no longer allows board patches, but that may be venue-dependent. They generally allow mike stands and DAT aud. Bruce's board is super hot, so if you get lucky and they do allow BA, come prepared with several attenuators.

BR5-49<Nashville, TN> (a) Taper friendly band that allows audience taping of their performances. DAT ok, mic stands ok, no SBD access. If you encounter a problem with the venue, ask to speak with Adam (their Tour Manager) and he will inform security. The band always does a meet & greet after their shows, and love to get copies of past performances. Bucket<Louisville, KY> (a,BA) They are cool about taping.

*Built To Spill<Boise, ID> (a,BA) They allow DAUD and BA, with certain venue restrictions. Their soundman is named Phil Ek and he is super friendly, and will usually patch you in if you get there early and show some common sense. After the show lead singer Doug Martsch will appreciate you mailing him a copy.

Burlap to Cashmere<Brooklyn, NY> (a) DAUD OK, Video and SBD policy unclear. They're really friendly folks; ask permission and you'll probably get it.

Burning Airlines<Washington D.C.> (a,v) BA? Please send them a copy of your tape.

Cartoon Mary<Nyack, NY> (a) This new all original project, consisting of Joe Pascarelle (lead guitar and vocals for The Machine) debuted at the wetlands on Aug.20,1998 They allow aud taping. Their BA policy is uncertain, but if you get there early, ask the soundman nicely and have all the correct connectors (usually, rca cables with rca>1/4" unbalanced for the -10db patch + other connectors) you may get lucky. Chan Marshall (of Cat Power)<Seattle, WA?> (a,BA) When a fellow taper recently (1/99) spoke to the promoter, he said it would be OK to give him a sb patch, however when he spoke with the sound guy, he was told that he would have needed to have signed legal releases a few weeks beforehand. Although both were very nice and happy to have him record the show with his mic.

Chaos Theory<San Jose, CA> (a) Jeff DiBartolomeo, their vocalist, has no objections to fans taping their shows, but asks that you please talk to him or someone in the band before setting up your equipment.

Charlie Hunter's Pound For Pound<NYC> (a) With his latest band, Pound For Pound, Charlie Hunter has been allowing daud taping more openly than in the past. He appreciates the interest from the taping community and only asks that you don't bug the band or sound crew for a board tape or bother them while doing their job. He doesn't mind if you make your own audience tape of them and trade it with other tapers, but no money should change hands. They also ask that you be considerate and discrete while audience taping. Conehead Buddha<upstate NY> (a,BA). They consistently allow daud taping, but board patches only if there is an out on the board. They appreciate a copy of anything recorded. Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues Band<Chicago, IL> (a,BA) They allow taping provided the venue doesn't object. Their soundman, Terry, will give you a board patch if you get there early enough. Same policy for the Siegel/Schwall Band.

*Cousin Fungus<Port Washington, NY> (a) Aud taping is allowed unless otherwise stated on mailer or at venue; SBD access in not permitted; video and photography are not permitted; the commercial use of any recording is strictly prohibited (personal use only); posting, transmission, creation or transcription of recordings as computer files (e.g., MP3, RealAudio, etc.) is strictly prohibited; tapers may be asked to show ID and to sign an agreement at venue. Dan Bern <?> (a,v,BA) DSBD and DAUD OK. He has given permission on several occasions for video, DAUD and DSBD taping. Your best bet is to contact his management in advance as they are aware of his permissive stance, and will go out of their way to help out. If you ever have a venue that you expect to give a problem (like GAMH in SF), call his management in advance and speak to Amanda Stark at 310-652-2205; she has even gone so far as to call a "problem" venue in advance to tell them that a taper would be taping *for the band*. When Amanda goes to the door to help you get in w/your equipment, the 1st thing she will ask you is if you have asked Dan for permission and if he has given it to you. If you don't have it, you may be turned away. At a show, his tour manager (Miki [pronounced Mikey, a woman] Walsh) may or may not be there to help you out. *Dar Williams<?, MA> (a) Dar Williams, a folkie from Mass., completely supports audience taping, but does not permit soundboard patches (either DAT or analog cassette) unless approved in advance via AGF, her new management company in NY. Regarding mic stands, this is likely venue dependant. During a July '99 show in Toronto, she spotted someone stealthing and stopped the show to tell him he could put his mics on the table so he can get the best sound. Venue restrictions may apply. Dave Alvin<?, CA> (a,BA) Dave recently (1/99) said after a show that he not only allows taping, he encourages it. He said he doesn't get to record often enough, his live CD has maybe a third of his regular material, and he mixes the set up every night, so encourages people to tape and trade. BA is dependent on the venue; ask early.

Dave Matthews Band<Charlottesville, VA> (a) No BA. No video. Mic stands OK. DMB's stance on taping is the following: the band supports taping, the sound people have instituted a taping section at many west coast venues and are working on setting one up at all venues in the near future. Right now though, it's a transitional period. Unless it's a rare non-taping event, you may still record from anywhere in the venue--even when there is a taper section designated. Most tapers tickets can only be purchased at the box office and many are obstructed view seats. At some venues, there's a special entrance for those with tapers tickets. It's a good idea to call before you get there and get the scoop. Make sure to get the name of someone in charge at the amphitheater so that if there is a problem, he/she can be called and you can get in without the hassle. *David Grisman Band<SF, CA> (a), No BA! Larry Cummings, their soundman, prefers that you be subtle while taping. He is very taper friendly and about the only restriction is that the *promoter* and the *house* cannot tape the show. Tapers in the audience are OK, but he asks that you bring no special equipment that would interfere with any other audience member's enjoyment of the show, e.g., no mics in the air blocking other people's view. Its best to contact the venue 3-4 days before the show to confirm that there's no venue prohibition of taping.

You will not have enough time to get from the second stage to the main stage without missing part of the latter, so plan your taping accordingly.

They do not have their own soundman, so if the soundguy gives you a problem, just ask a band member (nicely) to help you out. At most New York area shows Yossi will be there as the official taper, and he'll be happy to give you a patch. If he's not there, or if it's not a local show, bring mics if possible...many gigs don't have soundboards! Incubus<?> (a,BA) They encourage and allow daud taping and trading of their shows. They allow BA approximately 50% of the time, according to the mood of the soundman or band. Indecision<Charlottesville, VA> (a,v,BA) They still get together to play about 5 times per year. They stopped heavy touring about 6 years ago. *Jazz is Dead<?> (a,BA) After receiving reports in 1/99 that JID no longer allows taping nor do they play Grateful Dead tunes anymore, at the 4/5/99 show at the Rialto Theatre in Tucson, they played Dead tunes again and allowed DAT BA again. Jazz Mandolin Project<Burlington, VT> (a,BA) They are very pro-taping and now (1/99) allow BA once again, but you are more likely to be given BA at a small venue with only one or two tapers around the board. Jerry Douglas<?> (a) Jerry, who is currently playing w/Tim O'Brien and Maura O'Connell, has a sound engineer who is VERY picky about mic stands in seats. At Davidson College in Nov, 1998, he insisted the taper not block ANYONE's view or he'd be forced to move or take down entirely. 10 minutes prior to the show, after having been setup, and ready to go, he was forced to move and set up again near the console area. Be sure to be careful where and how you setup, as the soundman mentioned growing more frustrated with tapers and was considering discontinuing taping this tour due to several other people who frustrated him. Even though the taper tried to be nice after he moved, the soundman was still angry. His shows tend to run around 1:55:00.

*Jesus Lizard<Chicago, IL> (a,v,BA) Although I previously reported that they disallowed taping in Minneapolis in 7/98, it appears that was an exception and they definitely allow all types of audience taping. Board access is becoming more frequent, but needs permission by soundperson. Stands are allowed with clearance from the soundperson. Video taping is not so warmly welcomed by band, but requires permission ahead of time. If using any type of rig or stand it is helpful to be there at time of load in, and get permission.

The JGB Band<San Francisco, CA> (a,BA) They definitely allow aud taping, barring any venue restrictions. Check with the venue first and if they give you trouble, ask them to contact the band. They have a new soundman and have recently (1/99) started allowing BA and the soundman appreciates it if you send him a clone.

Jerry Manuel, their sound engineer, Denny Jones, their road manager, and Roz, their monitor man, are very helpful getting tapers set up. If Jerry doesn't have the single XLR board patch available, you may have to get a line out of Jerry's SV-255, which has a mini digital output. Get there early! If Jerry does not see any tapers, he won't put out the patch. You will most likely have to sneak your equipment in to the venue. They often play one long 2:15 set. Mic stands OK as long as they are low, near the soundboard and out of the way of other patrons. If you have problems getting your equipment in or setting up should ask for Louie Stetzel, their soundman, the road manager or the head of security. Louie and the sax player, Steve Berlin, love to get copies of tapes. They are much better now at informing the venues of their pro-taping policy, but the head of security is not always perfect at informing his workers.

Metallica<San Francisco, CA> (a,v) Taping tickets available on the regular on-sale date. No equipment allowed in without such a taper ticket. Mic stands are generally not welcome however. The entire Load tour has had a taping section near the stage, with tickets being sold via regular ticketmaster outlets. However, ticket salespeople are often clueless as to the existence of taper tickets and it's often safer to get them from the box office. These do sell out quickly.

They ask that you bring your own mics and deck. Please stay out of the way of the working crew at all venues. Steve Young, their new FoH soundman, is currently allowing ONE mic stand to be set up in front of the board. Three pairs of mics will be allowed to be set up on the stand, then lots of folks can patch out of each of the three setups. As long as this doesn't get out of control all will be fine. If mic stands get set up in front of the light board then the front of soundboard stand goes away. Be nice to Chris Ragan, the lighting director. In particular, please do not set up your mic stands in the "sweet" spot without checking first with Chris. He continues to be frustrated with newbies setting up mic stands directly in the way of his line of sight. If you see someone setting up a stand right in front of his lighting board, please explain to him kindly and gently the policy of not impeding his line of sight. It's also wise to set up your mics 5-10' from the soundboard, as the soundman and the lightman tend to talk to each other a lot during the show, which can come out on your tape. Some things that are never allowed at moe. shows are: camcorders, large mixers, reel-to-reel, home decks, long extension cords, etc. They ask you to cooperate with them so they can continue to provide as cozy a taping environment for everyone as possible. *The Pat McGee Band<Richmond, VA> (a,BA) for BA talk to Paul their sound engineer. Paul is very cool with tapers, but please try to stay out of his way during the show. For digital folks,the band now runs an HHb DAT deck from the board and a daisy chain comes from it. If you want to be first or second out, you need to get there early. Offering to make the band a copy is a good gesture. Venue restrictions may apply. Ask to speak to Paul, their sound engineer or Jeff Caldwell, their road manager, if a venue gives you flack about getting your equipment in. Their shows usually run a little over two hrs., but at times runs close to three especially their two set shows. Check with Jeff or Paul about that. Radiators<New Orleans, LA> (a,BA) They encourage DAT BA and even have a special patch bay for your use. It contains six pairs of RCAs, one set of 1/4" tip-ring jacks and two sets of XLRs. The XLRs are the first to go, then the RCAs. If you use the XLRs, your deck must have a preamp to provide enough gain for adequate levels. The decks that are known to do this are: HHB Portadat, Panasonic SV250 & 255, Sony D10 Pro-II, Tascam DA-P1 and Teac DA-P20. BTW, they also have an AC power strip for your AC needs. One caveat: the level off the patch bay is *very* low, so prepare your record level accordingly. First come, first served. Typically, there are several chains running.

The Rachel's<Louisville, KY> (a,v,BA) They are very taper friendly, will allow BA if you talk to Jason Noble.

Ratdog<San Rafael, CA> (a) While their taping policy is normally to restrict daud taping to behind the board, there are times when they allow you to tape FOB from your seat with a mic stand, especially when the board is up against the back wall. *Robert Walter's 20th Congress <San Diego, CA> (a,BA) A sidecar project of the Greyboy Allstars, they openly encourage taping. Ask for Brian Groves, their road manager, if you run into any problems. He goes out of his way to help tapers, provided they use common sense. As more and more tapers are appearing, he sometimes asks tapers to clamp more than one set of mics on a stand. Board access is always allowed, and the band enjoys matrix mixes as well. Mics onstage are SOMETIMES permitted, but there are many variables. Sammy Hagar<?> (a?,v?) In Oct, '97, in the club Cabo Wabo which Sammy owns in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, he allowed several video cameras from vacationers during a concert there, but his normal taping policy needs clarification.

The Samples<Boulder, CO> (a,v,BA,minidisc) The Samples have apparently not broken up, but have changed band members. Their open taping policy still seems to be in effect.
