I'm interested in finding out what speeds people normally burn their DVDs at. I always use 2X, but I wonder if I'm being too over cautious in doing so?

Thanks,
Chris.

I always use 4x, regardless of having an 8x or 16x blank

"over cautious"? "over cautious"? Isn't that an oxymoron?

I choose 4x and let me explain why ...

I bought a couple spindals of TY 4x DVDRs so they naturally burn at 4x. Typically I just let my burner choose the speed it wants to burn at. I tried a couple times of specifying rates, with DVDRs and CDRs (I know you didn't ask about CDRs but I included them anyway) and had bad results. Often times with CDRs I would get bad burns and occasionally with DVDRs too. It didn't matter if I choose the slowest speed or if I choose the quickest speed. I would get all sorts of errors. When I let the burn select the speed it wants to burn at then I get almost no errors at all. I use TY media almost exculsively.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I would burn at 2x but my burner just willnot let me get down there anymore....but I never burn over 4x....at home...I have an older rig ...and the speed I use on it is 2x....but I dont use it near as much ......I never have a bad burn.....I hate to sound like that...but I just cant recall the last time I had to toss a disk away....and as far as cdr's....I think I usually set the burn speed to about 24x for audio...and slower if I am doing some sort of video data burn....and like Frank....I use TY's....and that helps out I believe. But....I an't near as good as you are at any of it Chris!....Burning is common man's knowledge....you and Frank, Dokken,Ory,Radical, Randy.....you guys rock! If you guys did not put some stuff together....heck...we would not have anything to burn at these "great" speeds.

I use 4X but also if you use max you still get perfect copies...

what I do is when I burn I dont do anything on PC and that way rarely get any errors that way

could depend on Burner and media as well

I use 4X for dvd's and 2X for cd's. And like NJ, I don't do anything on the computer while it's ripping/burning.

I usually burn at 4X, using Maxdata 4X discs....

4X or 8X have never caused me any problems. However, EVERY dvd i've ever recieved burnt above 8X has caused me nothing but problems. Why do some people insist on burning at 16X? They won't play on any equipment, and sometimes can't even be re-burnt at a lower speed so you can actually use the bloody things. I'm having this problem at the moment with an Aerosmith disc i'm trying to copy for Kent. :furious:

I burn at 16x ... just kidding!

...can't see anyone owning up to that one, then expecting a trade.

4x for me, but I too do nothing on my mac, cause the dam thing crashes the burn? don't know why.

I sometimes burn at 8x but this sometimes creates a problem with the disc. I believe it depends on where the discs are purchased from. I generally do not have any problems with 4x.

For DVD's I burn at 4x....and like others have mentioned, I shut down ALL other programs on my PC when burning discs. I also use mostly TY's. This is what works for me.......

BTW, for CD's I always burn at 8x.....

Yeah, i'd agree with that...I've used maxdata 8X discs and burnt them at that speed for trades if i was doing a ton of discs and never had any complaints, even with all region, PAL standalone authored discs that were sent to USA traders and watched on NTSC equipment.

BUT if i burn TDK 1X - 16X discs at 8X problems have occured. It's all down to the discs used i guess.
