|
|
When looking for video or DVD boots which tours do you go for 1st? and why? Lets list all the VH tours in our own personal priority order.
For me (highest priority first)........
1980 - cos there is so little available, the black hole of DVD boots. Also my first gig was 22/6/80.
1978 - where it all began, I'd love a pro-shot from this era! Very little about, mostly 8mm film.
1981 - the bands peak IMO and another dark cavern of DVD emptiness
1979 - similar reasons to 78
1984 - a full pro-shot would be great, but we do have some stuff from this era, not such a great on stage vibe though.
1982/3 - I really like this tour, the only reason I've put it so low it we already have plenty of footage from it.
1998 - great set lists that vary night to night, lots of oldies + Ed's on top form.
1988/9 - not much around of any quality other than the Tokyo pro-shot
1995 - Ed's 2nd peak IMO (nowhere near as high as the 1st one though!) and the best Van Hagar tour.
1993 (European leg only) - better set lists (more CVH) plus I went to this tour too.
1986 - LWAN make it fairly low priority, but nice aud shots are thin on the ground
1991/2 and the rest of the 93 tour - lots of boots, nearly always the same set list and if I hear Sammy say "lets get back to 1984" again I'll scream - boring and predictable.... Ed's guitar tone is nice though.
2004 - lots of boots of this abysmal, embarrasing train wreck of a tour. I never watch my 04 boots it upsets me too much!......and turn that 'kin sustainer off Ed or I'll shove it up your arse!!!
Over to you........
Chris. |

I started off looking for CVH era, then 95, then lost control and went for anything and everything with Ed on, no matter how short in lenth :D
My biggest downside to CVH era is quality. Due to technology then (even with pro shots), it kinda takes time to re-adjust your eyes, from whats become the 'norm' of tv standards today. I usually opt to watch a cvh show first before any other boot... going back from say a 95 show, to cvh, takes the edge off the enjoyment for me.
But still my priority for looking/hunting is...
1. All CVH era, although '84 is my least favourite due to the long (adoration) hold ups by Dave! ok if you were at the show, but for recorded pleasure for years to come? ... cut the crap and get on with the music.
Largo 80, will come out at some stage (PLEASE).
2. Balance tour '95 upgrades, Ed at his best. Some well filmed shows with great sound (US not Europe). Shame Ed had the hip discomfort.
3. European Leg '93 upgrades or uncirc. stuff. Some well filmed shows and due to venue sizes pretty good sound and energy along with a good set list.
Least favourite tour- MOR 88, venues too big, poor sound and anything from the 04 tour (but this is a well documented and great filmed tour). |

Chris I think you have laid out an impressive list and excellent reasons. I agree with most of it however for me I think I would make a couple minor changes. First I would move 1986 to the very bottom. It was my least favorite tour. Second just above 1986 would probably be 1988/1989 and/or 1991/1992. I also didn't care a lot for those. The 1993 tour which was one of my favorites I'd have to move up slightly but otherswise I think you are spot on with your picks and reasons.
P.S. Shooter, I also collect all eras but this is just kindda a priority thing. If I was faced with an excellent Pro-Shot 1980 video and an excellent 1986 Pro-Shot video I can tell you right now I'd go after the 1980 before the 1986. It doesn't mean I wouldn't want to get the 1986 eventually but I'd first be after the 1980. I collect all eras but some I place a higher value on than others. |

hi everyone, what a great subject! for myself,i have to say that due to the 3 Oakland vids,1981 is my fisrt choice.
what a great energy and stage production.
#2 is 1979 cause it was more acrobatic, the guys were young and hungry for it.great set list(cvh of course)!!!
#3 is1980:it was my first VH concert here in montreal still have pics of this show.another great cvh tour that should come out on video
#4 is 1984 for the stage production,V-H was bigger than ever(those were good times)
#5 is 1978 i would love a pro-shot cause all i've seen is lip-synch or unwatchable
#6 is 1995 clean act and lots of good boots
#7 is 1998 not for Gary but for ed's performances and they took out some cvh tunes on this tour
#8 is 2004 there"s a lot of good boots even if ed was falling on his ass almost every night
#9 is 1992-93.seen them in montreal very good show but i'm not very into this one |

I collect them all, but I agree with your order Chris. Im a bit old school, so the later years, or the Greatest hits eras are on my bottom.

| I'm just a casual collector of kick ass shows. I love all eras and I'll take any good quality shows from any era. I don't have any DVD's from before Largo '82. I don't really want a show that's not watchable no matter how rare it is. |

Cool topic...I'm into collecting anything VH related I can get my hands on.
#1 - To me the "Holy Grail" would be a 1981 pro shot or anything respectable from that tour.
#2 - any and all from the 1984 tour.
#3 - 1991/92/93 - Anything, Eupopean or not. I know the same set list and same stage talk gets annoying but I loved the F.U.C.K. record as well as Edward's tone on that tour!!
As I said, I'll go after anything (CVH, Sammy, Gary) I can't help myself. |

Well since I'm only 19 and have never been to a Van Halen concert I am very interested in almost all eras....
1. Anything from the 70's up to 1981
2. Balance Tour '95
3. F.U.C.K Tour '91-'93.
4. 5150 Tour
5. Diver Down Tour
6. 2004 Tour (only interested in worcester which i still need to find)
7. 1998???? I was never interested in this era at all just because all i have seen from a couple clips on youtube were gary cherone's horrendous performances - but since people are saying ed was playing well I will definitiely reconsider.
8. And finally the OU812 Tour which I have no interest. |

If it was, I wouldn't have been eligible anyways. :( I've only been part of the site for a month, and only my 9th post, heh. |

I agree. For me, the '81 tour was the best of everything......excellent setlist, and the band was in top form on most nights of the tour. |

I almost always go to the '82 tour first, then to the '84 tour as these boots offer excellent sound quality.
'81 is quite good too depending on the taper for that particular show. |
