So did this ever get synched?
Anyone got both the DVDs and upgraded audio?
I was in Iraq when this all first started getting posted, so I missed it until now.

I've been synching a lot IED and ALD recordings lately. The guys that tape them are kind of a spooky bunch that really keep a tight grip on their recordings. They trade them amongst each other, but are real sticklers for not letting them "outside the group." If you leak one ~ I'm sure you'll get blackballed for life. They don't like sharing the knowledge on how it's done either. The only reason I've been brought into the fold is because I am good at synching audio with video, to include synching audio with mpeg2 (which is a little more tricky than a standard synch job), and I have a reputation for not leaking shows.
IED (in ear device) can be really nice, but each performer has a different frequency and has his feed mixed so that it sends him only what he wants to hear. So it's not necessarily a nice, even feed of all instruments. In fact, sometimes they are just a couple instruments coming through loud and clear - and you can barely hear the rest. When mixed with an audience recording, they can really make for a sweet sounding matrix though. You can also hear stage managers & soundmen talking to the musicians sometimes - stuff that doesn't go through the sound system.
ALD (assisted listening device) is for the hearing impaired. Large venues (arenas) have them available - you just have to ask - obviously, they are for someone with a disability, so you need to play the part if you are asking for one. They tend not to sound all that great and can have odd sounds mixed in (clicks, whirring noises, etc.). But I've heard some that sound fantastic - nice even mix of all instruments that is similar to a soundboard, but not quite as crisp. Some serious tapers are really against ALD recordings because they give the taping community a "bad image" because people are taking advantage of something that's supposed to only be for the hearing impaired, and if bands or venues find out about them, they would probably get really pissed. I have read that it's not uncommon for someone who is hearing impaired to buy their own ALD. So I suppose if you have your own, you can say I didn't borrow one from the venue and potentially take one from someone who really needed it (although the word is that the venues have loads of them and usually only use a few each show).
IEDs and ALDs are frequently advertised as soundboards. If you are familiar with all three (IED, ALD, & soundboard), you should be able to tell them apart. I haven't heard this Atlanta recording, so I can't say.

Same here. I offered to do the synch a while back but was never able to get a copy of the DVD. Well, if Randy gets it done at least we'll know it is done right. |
