I would add Lars Ulrich to the list.
The problem with rock drummers is they are kind of working at a disadvantage in the genre of music they play. Loud distorted music sounds better with a driving beat rather than a lot of fancy rolls and stuff. That's why drummers in Jazz and music like that have so many tremendous players. Players that technically speaking would play circles around most rock drummers. However if you put them in a rock outfit playing in large stadiums how would all those rolls and fancy playing sound then.

Lars definitely has a distinctive sound... I remember listening to a Mercyful Fate album back in the early 90s and I could've sworn Lars was playing drums on 'Return of the Vampire.' I cracked open the liner notes and, low and behold, there he was. He's got that weighty bass drum hit and the snare crack (excluding the St. Anger experiment)... definitely not the best drummer on the planet, but he's got a distinctive sound that fits perfectly with his band.

One thing about Matt Sorum. He drummed on The Cult's tour for Sonic Temple in '89-'90 only. On the actual album it was all done by Mickey Curry.

Matt is good though, no doubt.

Iron Mike wrote: Yeah, as much as I love Van Halen, Alex is not god, sorry.

This is NOT in order:

John Bonham
Mickey Curry
Chris Slade
Neil Peart
Stewart Copeland
Tommy Lee

I was happy to see someone said Stewart Copeland!

no one mentioned Bun E Carlos, so I will. VASTLY under rated. I saw him do a clinic where he was saying stuff like I saw Keith Moon do this (Then did a dead on keith Moon impression) and this is how I incorporated it into this (Played one of his songs). It was pretty impressive. His drumming on the Music For Hangovers live album is great.

Another drummer I'd like to mention is Joey Kramer. Hard working, ( he literally beats the crap out of those heads ), and a real groove oriented, "in the pocket" player.
But I still think Neil's the best............... :D

If you have any doubt, buy or rent the Led Zeppelin DVD and watch the Royal Albert Hall performance on DVD one. John Bonham is simply the best.

Ian Paice is quite possibly the most underrated drummer ever. His genius is evident during the Mandrake Root arrangement
of "Space Truckin'" on "Made in Japan."

And a terrific multi-genre drummer that actually took Bonham's place during the Zeppelin reunion at Live Aid and never makes anyones list - Phil Collins.
My fave drummer of all time... Ian Paice, the greatest time keeper IMO

I've always loved to hear a drummer get the most out of a small kit, although I do like Peart :D
Ian Paice is amazing. Pure drumming GOD

Here's my list, in no particular order.

Ian Paice
John Bonham
Alex Van Halen
Cozy Powell

Always liked Roger Taylor from Queen to. :thumb:

I didnt' expect to see him mentioned and I'm bet no one will agree, but I'd like to see Tim "Herb" Alexander of Primus on the list. To be able to simply keep up with someone like Les Claypool has to take quite a bit of talent.

I'm not a drummer, and would be kind of interested in hearing a drummers perspective on Herb's performance.
