I'm not only a newbie to trading VH boots, I'm a newbie to trading in general. I need some advice from experienced traders in regards to preferred media. Since I'm a blank slate, so to speak, I'd like to learn from your mistakes and start off the right way.

I've seen many mentions made that Taiyo Yuden is one of the top names for quality DVDs, and I assume the same for CDs. I found some great deals at http://www.supermediastore.com, so I'm good to go with CDs and DVDs. Is it overkill if I always use a TY disk in a trade? Do most people care? I get the feeling that the traders on this site do care, contrary to what you might see at other sites.

I read the FAQ, and paper sleeves are preferred for encasing the CDs and DVDs, so I bought a bunch of them. That's all I need right? I read that you should never write on the CD, just attach a sticky. Then, use a bubble-wrap mailer.

My first set of questions have to do with labeling. I have an HP Photosmart printer at home, and I use Photoshop Elements for photos. Do I need anything else in order to make labels and CD case inserts? If I do, what software would you recommend? Do most of you make labels for your CDs, print CD case inserts, and then store them in jewel cases, or am I going overboard.

I'll follow up with other questions on a new thread. Thanks for any help that you can provide.

AWESOME Media ... TY is the BEST ... for both DVDRs AND CDRs!

AWESOME Store ... best place to buy media ... period!

I care. And no it is not overkill. I belong to three different messageboards like this and all three ... everyone cares. I am also on a mail list and those people seem to care a little bit but not as much. But wait until their media goes bad and see how much they care :D .

Yup that all you need ... I don't put stickies on the disc themselves but on the sleeve the disc goes in but that's just me.

You may or may not be going overboard. Depends on what you want. I never put labels on CDs but that's just me. I have some discs in cases and very few have artwork actually printed out. I have actually auite a bit of my discs on DVDR and in binders, I have a couple three ring binders that hold 200-odd discs and a couple that hold 128 discs and then some still in sleeves and some in cases as well as a bunch still on hard drives. It is a mixed bag for me ... but whatever works for you.

By-the-way ... welcome Newbie ... welcome ... looks like you are doing all the right things.

Yeah don't do labels, because sometimes they won't play in your player for whatever reason.

The adhesive sometimes eats through the coating of the disc, destroying the disc. Sometimes the label starts to peal and that can mess up your player. Labels = bad.

As everyone has said, the quality of the media counts - however, not everyone will use TY (in a perfect world, yes!). So which ones are good besides TY? For the answer to that, I refer you to:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Anything listed in 1st class is what you want to stick to and insist on when trading. Definitely use paper sleeves and a bubble mailer - NEVER WRITE ON THE DISC! Use a post it instead.
