I just discovered that I don't have a DVD burner on my computer, so I need to snag an external burner. Does anyone have a suggestion, or has anyone seen a great deal lately?

I did some web searching, reviewed some tech sites, and it seems to be a completely mixed bag. I've almost come to the opinion that if you plan to spend about $100 to $150, they are all pretty close to the same. Am I wrong? Should I plan on spending more, or am I in the right range?

Here is a link to a site that reviewed a bunch of burners, and they have a side by side comparision:

Does anyone have any experience with either the MegaSTOR model or the Plextor? The MegaSTOR has a two year warranty and comes with the Roxio software. The Plextor has a one year warranty and comes with Nero.

Thanks

I have laptop and recently this is what I did.....

Since external burners are very expensive versus internal so what you do is buy a NEC3550A internal burner for about $40 and buy a USB2.0 or/and Firewire enclosure to put your burner in there and hook up external :D

That way you can always buy any internal burners a cheaper price than external burners and just insert it in enclosure :thumb:

The NEC burner that Rad mentions is the best burner you will ever have! Completely worth the investment.

Thanks Rad, one more question though. How do I know which enclosure will work with each specific burner? Are they pretty interchangeable?

I bought my stuff at MICOBYTES. Ask there at store before purchasing Burner if they have enclosures .....and they will set you up :D

Basically as far as I was told there are inclosures for Hard Drives and burners.....I got one with USB2.0 and fireWire capable :D

Works great :thumb:

Then you can pretty much put any internal burner in there :thumb:

Other than the issue of price, are external and internal burners fundamentally the same? I have to admit, the more research I do into this, the more I see conflicting information. I've been to Hydrogen Audio, CD Freaks, and a few other sites, and there is certainly no consensus regarding internal vs external.

For me the only difference is maybe a bit of speed......internal may be a bit faster......

Its a matter of choice and convenience with same results :D
