Okie doke: Here's come the new guy spouting off again . . .lol
G' day Pals n' Gals:
Would you mind if I added a little bit so-called "Pro techie" advice and shed some light on the subject?
There are 4 distinct classes of recordable DVD media. Classes 1 and 2 are acceptable within the serious collector/trading community. The degree of quality that is lost once you get to 3rd class in NOT acceptable. Memorex discs are most nearly ALWAYS manufactured by a Taiwanese company by the name of "CMC Magnetics". The cheaper "on sale" Maxell discs sold at Office Depot, Wal-Mart, etc., are most nearly always going to also be cheap knock-offs that have been out-sourced to . . .you guessed it, CMC Magnetics.
At the time of this mini-novella tht I've just written in this thread, perfect solid choices of prosumer grade recordable media are:
1. Taiyo Yuden
2. Maxell/Hitachi (Made in Japan)
3. SONY
4. TDK
5. Verbatim (THE ONLY CHOICE FOR DUAL LAYER!!)
6. Richo (Not all of them, some are cheaply made out-sourced)
Now then. You're wondering how does this new guy claim to know so much? Well, I just do, so sit down, keep yer yap shut until you are spoken to. Is that understood recruit? *Snivlle ducks as 50 logitech mice bounce off the PC monitors *
Seriously, not only have I worked with digital medium since before anyone had even heard of DVD-R, but I've been a "tech" of one sort or another since my days as a radcomm in the RCR. I left the service in '92.
For any of you who own NERO Burning ROM (Ver. 6.x - 7.x) there is a utility included called 'NERO CD-DVD Speed'. It can read the MID (Media Identification Descriptor) of any disc that you put into your DVD-RW drive. There are similar utilities included in Plextor's and also BenQ's softwares as well. There are indipendent 3rd party softwares which will facilitate the same features.
The following link will take you to a page that you can pretty much rely on as being a tangible and verified source of information on this topic.
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Do yourselves and your trading partners the favor of generally adhering to the information from the the guide that I've linked to above. If you want to ensure good burns, and good quality discs that are compliant and will last over the years, then put lots of care into the hobby. Otherwise, you remain a novice or a schleprock. Cheap discs and burning faster than 4X is NOT the way to ensure that the honor and integrity of our beloved free music community remain optimal.
Thank-you for time,
As you were, men. |

Yes they make them: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-cd-r-media-cdr-media.html
I've never used them because I can still find Fuji MiJ discs locally. |

I agree with everything in your post other than the burning speed issue. There is considerable debate whether slow burning provides a benefit, and many people would argue the opposite (that you get better burns at higher speeds, provided that you have good equipment and media). I burn at slow speeds for trades just because I don't want to tweak anybody off if they ask me what speed I burned at.
I'm not saying that I'm an expert on burning speed, I'm just saying that you can find good arguments on both sides of the issue. |

Link?
I'd be interesting in reading something authoritative on how burning discs faster results in a better burn... |

I'm not sure that I've read anything authoritative on the benefits of burning at high speeds, nor have I read anything authoritative on low speeds either. Everything that I've heard has been based on anecdotal evidence, from "non-expert" sources, as far as I can tell. I've basically been reading threads at sites devoted to audio. Here are a couple:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=167952
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=69698
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=31107&st=0
Not conclusive either way, from what I can tell. The general consensus is that there is probably an optimal burn speed for whatever system you have, including burner, computer, and media. |

Good deal, just be aware that those are the Value Line TY's.
“Value Line” DVDs are made by Taiyo Yuden but don’t meet their high standards for premium DVDs. Then the manufacturer sells them as “Value Line” |
