Rocker and 'motorhead' Hagar visits Team KMA

SONOMA, Calif. – Sammy Hagar said he jumped out of bed when an early-morning phone call in Italy informed the rocker that Team KMA's Robbie Pecorari won the Sunbelt Rentals 100 at Nashville Superspeedway in mid-July.
"I went, 'Wahoo,' '' he said. "The whole thing is coming out and being competitive. Winning is just a big fringe benefit. It's just like when your record goes to No. 1."
Hagar, whose Cabo Wabo Tequilla brand is the primary sponsor of the No. 13 Team KMA car in the Indy Pro Series, took a backstage tour of the garage area at Infineon Raceway between the Indy Pro Series and IndyCar Series races. Hagar drew comparisons to a concert event and the Indy Racing League-sanctioned events.
"Everyone is here for the same reason, just like a rock concert," said Hagar, a frequent visitor to Infineon. "It's all about the excitement. It's an adrenaline rush, it's loud, it's an event and the skills involved in being a musician and a real race car driver are very similar. You have this big backstage that is the pits and garage area."
Team co-owner Jon Lewis said it was a pleasure to host the self-ascribed "motorhead."
"He loves cars, a car nut at heart," said Lewis, whose team is completing its first Indy Pro Series season. "It's great to have him come out here and see what it's all about and see his own car. It definitely adds some excitement to the weekend. We're looking forward to an even better year next year."
Hagar said the Indy Pro Series and IndyCar Series (Cabo Wabo is an associate sponsor on the No. 14 A.J. Foyt Racing car) are a good platform for the tequila brand.
"We wanted to get into racing and word got out," Hagar said. "They came to us and said, 'Hey, we're interested in doing it.' The thing about Cabo Wabo, what it brings besides some finances, it really brings a fan base. They know what Cabo Wabo stands for. It means these people are having a good time win or lose. This is a good time car, good time driver, good time crew. These people are out here to have fun and enjoy the love of racing, and that's what Cabo Wabo is all about.
"I think Cabo Wabo on a car stands for a lot. There's always a crowd around the pits where the Cabo Wabo car is, because we've got a fan base outside of the racing circuit." |
