On Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.ca/VAN-HALEN-LIVE-12-31-1977-OPEN-REEL-TO-REEL-TAPE-RARE_W0QQitemZ130171524916QQihZ003QQcategoryZ618QQtcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

THIS LIVE VAN HALEN TAPE IS DATED 12/31/1977. IT SOUNDS LIKE A FAIRLY SMALL VENUE. MORE OR LESS THE SAME SET LIST AS OTHER SHOWS I'VE HEARD FROM THIS ERA. SOUND IS A BIT MUFFLED, LIKE A TYPICAL AUDIENCE TAPE. AWESOME SOUNDING SHOW, THOUGH! RECORDED AT 3 3/4 IPS. MOST LIKELY ONE OF A KIND. GOOD LUCK BIDDING

Placed a bid, if I get it, I'll share it. It should be a master upgrade if not, it's nice to have :) .

I don't know...could easily be a ripoff. Personally, I'd be very leary about buying something like this. That's just me though..

Ya kind of thought the same thing--12/31/77 has been out for quite awhile, or at least different versions of it. For the price I wasn't sure that it would be worth it to find out.

Your best bet would be to contact Wooda at the DLR Forums and ask him what he thinks. He was "there" in the day and had master copies of these shows directly from the band. He would most likely be able to sniff out any bull shitters.

Rec'd a response from the seller today:

Dear liquid_steel_az,

Ebay cancelled it at at the last minute. If you want to make an offer
it's still for sale.

Well given that its recorded at a lower speed (3 3/4" IPS) "inches per second", is the equivilant of compressing a LARGE FILE onto 1 DVD.
The optimal recording speed would have been 7 1/8" speed, (the faster, the better).
Not knocking this find at all.
You don't come across this everyday.
The last time I saw someything like this, the tape owned by a "partnership" and I think they wanted $1500.00,
if I remember reading it correctly.

By the way, are they claiming that this is the MASTER reel or a dub from a master cassette/reel? In the 70s, people did trade reels, so it is more than possible that this is just a dub of one of the circulating (as torrented by Lou) shows.

Also note that Lou believes that the two Whisky sets are soundboards while this one is supposedly an audience recording....
