By that logic, I guess Bill Gates should stop selling Microsoft software: it's a product that many people want and he's the most filthy rich of them all. At last count he has 69 BILLION.

And how rich is Ed? I'm sure it's safe to assume he's a millionaire. And that means...he's just another of the already 262,800 millionaires in Los Angeles County alone. There are 8.9 million households in the US worth at least 1 million dollars (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/205412/the_united_states_the_land_of_89_million.html).

It's all relative...I'll bet there are plenty of people in Ed's neighborhood who look down their noses at him because his assets are only equal to a tiny fraction of theirs.

I say let him make all the money that he can and enjoy the American dream. He didn't inherit it, steal it, or extort it ~ he got it from working hard and deserves every penny he earns.

Well Guitard, now that you put it that way, I can kind of see your point. In my mind, I am thinking could the e-Bay profits be used for charity perhaps? Then again, I don't know if Ed perhaps already does quite a bit for charity already.

Ron, thanks for clarifying on the e-Bay thing, I'm not totally familiar w/how they work as my experience w/them has been minimal.

So just what exactly is a one-of-a-kind custom hand painted by Edward Freaking Van Halen, played on stage IN CONCERT by Eddie in front of thousands of people guitar worth?

I seriously Ed paints them.... did you notice the nice shiny finish? You think Ed laid that down in his spray booth over at 5150? He may have striped it, but that's about it as far as anything custom goes. Maybe if he played them for more then 1 song it would matter more to me, but I see them purely as a cash grab and find it extremely annoying. The least he could do is give the money to cancer or something worth while.

I am not trying to stir this thing up again...but I have copied from Ed's guitar site what is "advertised" about these guitars....
here is what it says......

Quote: Edward Van Halen is proud to continue the offering of the very limited edition line of the EVH Art Series Guitars. Each guitar is a one-of-a-kind work of art personally created by Eddie.

Each of these EVH Art Series Guitars will be hand striped and autographed by Eddie, and verified by a photograph of Eddie playing the guitar live. In addition, a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Eddie will also be included. To showcase and protect these one-of-a-kind guitars, each one comes with a specially designed and distinctive guitar case.

These EVH Art Series Guitars will be based on his
famous three original artworks:

Now....if you have not inspected these guitars up close....you cannot understand the beauty. Sure...they are over-valued....but lots of things in this world are over-valued. As far as I know ....there has never been a statement that Ed painted these guitars.....he just created the designs and striped them. I think it is great that he wants to share his art with his fans. You dont see this from many other rock stars .....sometimes you see some actors that do some art (like Red Skelton)...but in the end.....beauty as well as perceived value is all in the eyes of the buyer (owner)

I saw the White Stripes give their art for free at a flour mill in my home town last year. He isn't giving his fans anything. He's bending his fans over and showing them how much he cares.

You make it sound like someone is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy something. If there are people who want to buy these guitars and are willing to pay the price, and Ed is willing to sell them, what difference does it make to you?

There are artists out there who sell their paintings for hundreds of thousands of dollars each. I think they look like something a 1st grader made by splashing paint on a piece of canvas. I wouldn't ever consider buying them, even if they were only a $1 each. But I don't say anything about how much they are being sold for because it doesn't concern me.

that is the best part about someting like this situation:
Something is only as valuable as someone is willing to buy it for.

Ed stripes a guitar he plays on stage and sells it at auction. Someone is able to and willing to pay several thousand $$ for it. So be it. It's no different than me buying or selling a Star Wars toy on EBAY (it's just my $$ is scaled WAY down a bit).

I dunno, $6,500 for a Star Wars toy is pretty "up there"...
