Van Halen Taps Ryan Shaw For Opening Slot
Classic rockers Van Halen, who are in the midst of a successful nostalgia outing, have recruited soul singer Ryan Shaw to take over the tour's opening slot later this month.
Shaw climbs on board on Feb. 22 in Charlottesville, VA, taking over for current opening Ki-Mani Marley--son of reggae legend Bob Marley--who has been opening for Van Halen since the group's semi-reunion tour launched last fall.
Last month, Shaw picked up his first Grammy nomination in the Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance category for "I Am Your Man," a track featured on his debut album, "This Is Ryan Shaw."

| Ryan Shaw is awesome! I have his CD, real classic R&B stuff. Like voxwah said, it's no worse a fit, probably not much better, but he's really good and I think the crowd will enjoy him as an opening act. |

WTF???
dual meaning ~ "who the fuck?" and "what the fuck?"
Out of hundreds of bands who would collectively give their left nuts for an opportunity like this, two times in a row....they pick an unknown from a totally different genre...WHAT THE FUCK??
Think back to 1978...who gave you a big break and let you tour with them?? Was it Bob Marley? NO. Was it Aretha Franklin? NO.
It was a rock back named Black Sabbath!!!
Why don't you return the favor and find some young, up and coming, wild & crazy, guitar slinging rock band?? |

I remember seeing the last 3 Dave tours in the 80's and they always had some suck job opening up for them. I specifically remember the opening band on the Fair Warning tour getting booed off and then in '82 I think it was After the Fire who opened (Dar Kommisar).
Their first tour with Sammy.....Bachman Turner Overdrive?!!!
Not complaining since BTO played aat least a few singalongs that helped warm up the crowd. |

I agree that there are some up and coming rock oriented groups that could have been better choices:
Airbourne, 20 Grit for example.
But hey is anyone really going for the opening act?
It is just great to see Dave and Van Halen's getting along and rocking out again. |

I tried to sit through Marley in Vegas and just couldn't.
As for just going to see an opening act. In 1999, I went to see David Lee Roth open for Bad Company and left 2 or three songs into the Bad Compnay set. |

Speaking of bad openers...anyone remember The Velcroes in '83 (I think it was)...that's who was with them when they rolled through Austin at least.
I actually saw Cinderella open for Dave in Austin in '85/'86...my mind is slipping...and that was pretty decent (6th row, so it was tough to go wrong)... |

Heh, I went to see Dave open for Sam on the Sam and Dave tour and I left about 4 songs into Sam's set. :p :p |

| I didn't mean to offend anybody by making the statement "But hey is anyone really going for the opening act?" I really only referring to my thoughts to the opener on this VH tour. I also went to see DLR open for Bad company in 1999 and left before bad company was finished. |

Never heard of 'em. I will get to check them out when I see them 3/17/08.
...I would prefer they got someone like Autograph, who opened in 1984. |

So, the show last night was Ky-Mani Marley's last of the tour. Anything special happen?
Tomorrow night marks the first one for Ryan Shaw.... |
