VAN HALEN RARE ROTH RE-MASTERS Double DVD compilation of rare but very rough footage from the 1st VH line-up. DIE HARD ROTH ERA FANS ONLY!!!!
B- to A- 129M 1 NTSC SA CUST OSKY PRODS
Total Running Time - 129M
2 Discs
Format - NTSC DVD
Authored on a Philips DVDR75 stand alone recorder. Thumbnails for each title and chapter points at the start of each song.
Re-mastering done with GTH Electronics ACE converter/timebase corrector + Tascam 6 ch audio mixer
Bit Rate - 9m/b sec approx.
Disc 1 (64M)
1. Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY 13/11/82 41M - aud HH (rather shaky!) - fairly low gen B+ - this needed a lot of colour correction as the original was very green (camera set up incorrectly I would guess?), the colour is still a long way off what it should be, but I think its better. Starts with Ice Cream Man and runs through to the end of the set, so you get all of Ed's solo.
2. Paliebro, Caracas, Venezuela 16/1/83 - 20M - TV VERSION - please note this is the edited broadcast version of this gig. It differs greatly from the BTB version of the raw un-edited footage. In this version you get full length - Romeo Delight, Unchained and Jamie's Cryin which aren't on the BTB version. Plus clips of Secrets, Bass solo, Drum solo and Happy trails/YRGM. I have edited this together from 2 different sources, one B+ the other B. It's a bit glitchy, but I have never seen this footage anywhere else before.
3. Pretty Woman - San Remo Festival Italy 1982 - 3M - This is a lip-sync performace that you may well have seen before, BUT this is sourced straight from a PAL VHS TV master so the quality is a straight A.
Disc 2 (65M)
1. Ibirapuera Gymnasium, Sao Paulo, Brasil - 21/1/83 - TV VERSION - 47M - this is the TV edit of what you may have on the BTB full gig version (which incidentally, I did all the re-mastering on, if you have the 2 disc version). So why would anyone want this version? Well mainly, the colour on this version is much better. You also get a bit of pre-show footage and interviews (in Portugeese) with fans. The footage is still fairly generated, but not bad, I give it a B+. There is about 10 mins where there is a hum bar in the background (lines rolling up the pic). The editing for TV is fairly heavy and many tracks are cut short.
2. Charleston Civic Center, Charleston, WV - 20/5/81 - 12M - aud HH 8mm film footage - this was originally silent footage, but someone has dubbed audio from the LP versions of the songs in the background. Not the greatest footage in the world, but seeing as though 1981 stuff is so thin on the ground, its worth a look IMO. Quality, probably B- (8mm film is never that great at the best of times).
3. Japaneese TV 1978 - You Really Got Me (lip-sync) and interview - 6M - this has to be their earliest TV performance that has survived the years. Ed has his Frankenstrat with its original white body with black stripes (a la 1st LP). Cheesy stuff, very funny! Quality is pretty good considering its age, probably 3rd gen, I'd give it an A-.

2. Loss of Control - Promo - colour version - from Australian TV 1980 - a bit glitchy but much better than the 47th generation B&W copy that crops up on some Dave era compilations! This is the only promo not to appear on BTB prods excellent 'Rage Red and More' DVD set. - (B+) 3 mins
3. Pink Pop Festival, Landgraaf, Holland 26/5/80 - Dutch TV - very short clip of band playing RWTD + interviews with fans and groupies with the sound of VH playing live in background - generated with some colour drop-out but very rare (B-) 4 mins
4. Music Box - German TV 1981 - Unchained + short interview - lip-sync - (A-) 4 mins

1. MTV Europe Headbangers Ball special - interviews with the whole band, live clips from secret club gig 27/1/95 Luxor Holland, Ed and Al on Dutch radio (Ed speaks a little Dutch) and a guided tour of Eds guitars, amps and effects rack by Eddie himself. - digitally edited (no ads or promos) SVHS>VHS>HD>DVD - (A) 59 mins
2. Milan Italy 30/1/95 - Italian TV special from a small club - (I know this is already available on DVD but I believe this to be a better copy) 1st gen PAL Hi Fi StereoVHS digitally edited (no ads or logos in middle of gig) > DVD - 46 mins

Notes: The source for this came to me on one SA DVD with random chapters captured at SP mode. The picture was in big need of some serious colour correction (too dark, very low colour, hue off). The colour is fine now and I have brightnened it as much as possible, but due to the way the screen was filmed it is still pretty dark at times, but it is better than it was. I also re-EQed the audio, which has turned out realy nice. The original was lacking in bass and mid-range. The shape of the picture on a regular shape TV makes people look long tall and thin, this is because it seems to have been filmed in anamorphic 16:9 widescreen. If you have a widescreen TV/monitor you should be easily able to correct the picture shape so that it fills the screen and everyone looks about the right size. I'm pretty pleased with how this has come out. Although not quite a pro-shot, it is very watchable and gives some great close-ups. Sometimes the feed to the screen has effects added to lower the frame rate, which I personally could do without, but I can live with. The band are on good form and Eddie is on fire!

....So hot off the press is this version of 625/50 PAL Rarities DVD (disc 1) that I originally authored back in 2003. I have been working on this project for over a year now, I thought I had it ready a couple of times last year and then I’d find some better footage and have to start again. This new version comes with 30 mins of new footage that was not on the 2003 version, plus lots of upgraded sources too.
Much of this footage is already out there on DVD, but most of it has been ‘stolen’ from the NTSC version of the original version and re-encoded often quite poorly. A good case in point is Burnin in Buenos Aires which has crappy versions of nearly all the titles off the original disc.
As you may have noticed this disc is PAL format, I will not be making an NTSC version like I did with the 2003 edition. Back in 2003 when I made version 1, PAL playback equipment was very hard to find in NTSC land. Since then things have changed and it is quite easy to get PAL compatible and it is not expensive either. So please don’t think I am being mean in not making an NTSC version, I am just trying to keep the trading pool quality up. I would also ask you all not to re-encode this footage in anyway including conversion to NTSC, that would defeat the purpose of putting out the best quality versions in their original format.
