Notes to the VH Greensboro show:

- This is a completely different recorded source than previously released in torrent & the sound to this recording is good.
- When the band hit the stage for the Intro, I cannot describe the feeling I got thru my whole body, a rush better than any drug could give me. The curtain swings wide, and the band lets loose…
- You Really Got Me was ausome, that set the stage for the concert that was about to become reality
- I’m The One sounded really good, but when they completely stopped mid song to let the crowd roar, I got goose bumps over my whole body, incredible feeling!! Its obvious Dave & Eddie are ON!!
- Runnin’ With The Devil was great with Wolfie setting up the song
- Romeo Delight has always been a crowd favorite, and this rendition was no different, and includes a small bass solo by Wolfie and includes small Magic Bus
- Somebody Get Me a Doctor was ausome, with Dave and Eddie side by side
- Dance The Night Away was good, but started having problems with the recorder at this point
- Everybody Wants Some was incredible and has Dave and Eddie competing together
- Mean Street sounded great live tonite!!
- Alex has a very good, solid drum solo
- Unchained is still one of the best rock songs ever performed, enough said
- And The Cradle Will Rock has Dave saying to Eddie, “Don’t fuck with me while I’m singing” and ends with an ausome Smoke on the Water rendition
- Hot For Teacher is always a crowd favorite and sounded really good
- Little Guitars is a great summer time song, and a great live song
- Dave’s Rap prior to Ice Cream Man has pot with seeds and an old girlfriend tale
- Panama is still a Rock Anthem
- Eddie’s Guitar Solo and Eruption was almost right on, and you never get sick of listen the guitar God!!
- Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love sounded great, and a perfect ending to a perfect show
- The encore was piped in 1984 and Jump. Well turns out Eddie may have grabbed a wrong guitar for this song, cause, well, it sounded like shit, but still listenable!!

This was the first recording with my newly bought gear, the AT831's and the SP-SPSB-8 battery box. I purchased the low-sensitivity modification on the mics which maybe I shouldn't have done. I set the gain at 14 on the Edirol, which was a good level for the AT853's and beyerdynamic MV100 preamp I had been borrowing from my Police trading buddy K.D. However, that gain was too low for this. I decided to set the levels and forget about it in the bathroom, and unfortunately it was only topping out at -20 dB. It also didn't help I was up against the back wall of the arena on the left side, underneath press boxes which formed a little awning over our row. I was also fiddling with the mics from time to time, which is why you'll hear them bumping around. And, I had to keep contorting my body to account for the many jerks around me. The guy right next to me screamed in my ear all night, and everyone had to walk in front of me to go up and down the steps for beer. It seemed like the entire section was doing everything possible to ruin my enjoyment of the show. In any event, this came out clear, but also quiet and distant. I had to boost the volume +17 on Goldwave to get it to as loud as possible without clipping. The end result is an alright, distant, echo-y recording that's an alternate source for collectors. Fortunately, I did have the presence of mind to record an FM promo off 102.9 WMGK here in Philly on August 17, 2007, the day before the Philly tickets went onsale on August 18, 2007.

Notes:

Second recording with my newly bought gear, the AT831's and the SP-SPSB-8 battery box. I set the gain at 20 on the Edirol, knowing that 14 was not good per the previous night's recording. The VU meter peaked mostly around -8 dB, though a handful of times it would get up to -6 dB. This is a much more upfront, less echo-y recording than the previous night. It helped that I had much better seats and a clearer shot at aiming at the PA stacks. Unfortunately, from where I sat, there was some distortion in the mid-ranges which is present on Eddie's guitar, and where there are heavy vocals such as the chorus of Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love. This has nothing to do with my volume adjustment, as the distortion is definitely there on my master WAV's. Nothing I can do about that. Overall I think it's a pretty good recording. One thing to note is that during Unchained, security came around to pretty much right where I was sitting because some jack-offs were sitting in the wrong seats, and the people who did have those seats were claiming them. I don't know why it took until the middle of the concert for this to happen. Anyway with security right near me I contorted my body to make sure they didn't see my mics which were sticking out of my shirt, which affected the sound quality. My heart was definitely in my throat though!

This was definitely a weaker performance than 10/1. The crowd was not as into it, and you could feel that it was just less intense. DLR did ad lib a little more off the cuff though, and he changed up the story preceding "Ice Cream Man." Eddie's guitar tuning was really awful in spots, and "Romeo Delight" was an overall disastrous performance, where you can twice hear where they were pumping in background vocals prematurely. Notes: After a completely dismal recording of the first show, I was determined to make this one much better. The only problem I encountered was a slightly low recording level and a hippie girl doing the retard dance in the aisle next to me. The low levels were done on purpose - my first night had very hot levels (but not peaking or distorting). I unfortunately had a lot of talkers, screamers and out of time clappers around me who you could hear BETTER than the band at times. Little did I realize that this had little to with my levels, and everything to do with the fact that I didn't use my battery box the first night. Live and learn.

On to THIS recording - Overall, I think it came out very good - all vocals and instruments are very up front, crowd noise and chatter is at a minimum. Since I had to boost the levels considerably on the computer, you can hear some slight air in quiet spots, but it's not really that bad at all. The performance is OK..the first night was better, but alas my recording was not. I realize this night was already upped, but I think this is a very good sounding alternate source.

How about some trading on VH Trading! First couple of songs are missing due to operator/equipment error. Sound gets better as the show goes on (and I became less paranoid). We were on the floor about half way back (last row of first section) and the sound was pretty good. I also grabbed the first night but it is also cut and doesn't sound as good. After a string of unseasonably warm (mid-80s) autumn days in Northeast Ohio, Wednesday, October 10, 2007 found hyperkinetic birthday boy David Lee Roth visiting a decidedly cooler, rainy Cleveland with the Van Halen boys. Quicken Loans Arena hosted a sellout crowd for the band's first gig at the venue in over three years, and spirits were high. The set was unchanged from earlier shows in Charlotte, Greensboro, and Toronto. Even Dave's "passing the joint both ways" intro to "Ice Cream Man" and "three parts original, one part inevitable" declaration were the same, indicating that the man's got his schtick down. But the band rocked hard without feeling too rehearsed, and the Cleveland crowd ate it up and returned the love.

There were a few novel moments. Instead of telling Dave to "give that person you're talking to a break" during the "Unchained" rap, Wolfgang simply echoed Ted Templeman and said, "Give me a break." Eddie, for his part, acknowledged Diamond Dave by preluding his guitar solo with a bluesy, Hendrix-inspired tear through "Happy Birthday."

You'll hear some angle phasing going on during the recording. The taper had his cardioids clipped securely to the sides of his baseball cap (just over the ears). But he had some piss-poor company in his aisle and overzealous neighbors in front of him. So you'll "hear" some head-turning going on. A few guys (and one girl) were more interested in getting beer than giving the music some, and repeatedly disrupted our entire row by squeezing through. One guy even bemoaned the lack of foot space available for his passage: "They should have two foot aisles!" he yelled in our faces.

Thanks, buddy. Now in addition to making us get up, you've documented your opinion about arena ergonomics on our recording.

Later, you'll hear a lady in taper's row announce that she and her guy friend, "have to pee." Again, thanks for the ignorance, ma'am.

Early on you'll hear taper and his neighbors shouting for people in the rows in front of them to sit (the f*ck) down. A lone girl in our section stood up the instant the band launched into "You Really Got Me," so the people behind her were forced to stand if they wanted to see, and so forth. The frustration was all so unnecessary; the girl should have been cool and stayed put until the end, when everyone was up. I believe taper's words are, "Sit down! You're f*ckin' ruining it for everyone else!"

Fortunately, by the third song Ms. Ivana Dance parked her rotund ass, and the rest of us sat back down and were again able to clearly see the stage (and video screen) instead of her generous backside. Turns out some guy in our row had gone down to explain our predicament to the chick, who begrudgingly complied a few moments later.

A disc change was made after the first part of Alex's drum solo. We felt it was the safest place to do so. Disc Two continues with a loss of about twenty seconds for the change.

We should mention that security was very tight at the venue, more so than we've ever encountered there. We don't know if this was specific to Quicken Loans Arena, or if the band or promoter called for it (although we do know that the band / management were not doing an in-house broadcast of the performance for ALD). The arena had permanent walk-through metal detectors installed in 2002, and on this evening there were two guards with hand-held wands waiting just beyond each detector to go over anyone who beeped, for any reason. Still photography was permitted for the event, but when cameras, cell phones or keys triggered the walk-through detectors, fans found themselves hustled aside and given a thorough wanding.

Notes:

I decided to make an insane 500 mile drive to Toronto from Philly, and I made this decision pretty much the night before and as I got up at 4:45 AM on October 12, 2007 to hit the road. This is the third recording with my newly bought gear, the AT831's and the SP-SPSB-8 battery box. I set the gain at 20 on the Edirol. The VU meter peaked mostly around -8 dB, though during Ed's solo it got higher because he kept banging the shit out of the guitar. I made appropriate volume adjustments to have it as loud as possible without clipping.

This is a pretty good recording. Unlike Philly 10/3 there's no distortion in Roth's voice, even though the levels were the same for both nights. The stereo separation is not as wide as I would have liked, as I was kind of rushed getting my gear together--why does the ACC have only TWO stalls in the men's room? So I had to do a lot of the setup in my seat with an usher looking in my general direction. I could NOT find the fucking clips to the mics without exposing my gear, so I just pulled up the mics loose and stuck them on top of my jacket zipper, so they weren't spread far apart for recording. There are also times where you can hear the mics hitting against my jacket or against each other...oh well, it really doesn't detract much from the recording. It's got a nice, clear sound to it, a tad dry, but not bad. The ACC has very good acoustics in my opinion. Because I was fidgeting with the mics the sound is a little inconsistent during YRGM, nothing horrible but it's not "settled." From "I'm The One" on things stabilize and the sound is consistent through the rest of the show.

In order to preserve some element of surprise, knowing I was going to this show, I did not read any setlist or any accounts of the previous shows. I especially didn't want to know of any of Dave's classic raps, and then it turns out there were very few. During the second song I was thinking "when is Dave gonna' get loose?" I was kind of expecting the non-stop action DLR of the eighties. But what I soon after realized is that Dave was actually SINGING the tunes, not speaking them like before, and he sounded really good. Also, unlike before, he was singing a lot more of the actual choruses, where he used to just let EVH and MA take care of it. My guess is that he's got to choose one or the other, the action or the ability to breathe so that he can sing properly. This time, it's very clear that the emphasis is on the songs, and no doubt about it, they sound better as a band today than they did back in the old daze. Great show. Eddie is "back" for sure.
It's hard for me to say what is different here than previous shows, but one thing unique about this show is that DLR talks about the fact that he was born in Bloomington(which is about fifty miles south of Indy), and grew up in New Castle, which is where we stopped for gas on the way to the gig. During the show, Dave makes a few local references, and tells a story about his family history in New Castle. Pretty cool. Bloomington is a great little town.
This is a very clean recording, there were no whistlers or screamers anywhere near me. Only had one person pass in front of mee the whole two hours, during the second song. Thankfully, the crowd around me was the most quiet during the times that the band "brought it down a bit", so none of that was ruined even a little. I will use some of those for samples.

Great show, a solid A- Audience recording with very little chatter, i must say that anyone who was or is a fan this is a must see tour. Anyway this recoring came out nice and clean. This has no post production except for the file splits. Very well balanced and the only thing that may bother some is it may be a hair light on bass. Enjoy and please don't redestribute in mp3. Taped the opener also that turned out very nice if anyone is interested in that let me know. Also Artwork would be greatly appreciated.

My comments:

I'm not a big Van Halen fan, but it was nice to see one show from the most eagerly anticipated tour of 2007. The performance was in line with other reports from the tour ... David and Eddie seemed to be getting along great (a $1.5 million payday for a two-hour probably helped their spirits), and Wolfie surprised me with how good he was on Michael Anthony's parts. I can't say that I really missed MA musically, although Wolfie has a ways to go to get the "rock star" pose down -- he looked kind of uncomfortable trying to ape for the crowd to get them more into the show. Eddie was on fire, hopping around the stage like a 25-year-old. I'd only seen them on the 2004 "reunion" tour, and this was a vast improvement.

The recording itself came out better than I expected. I was in the corner behind the stage and didn't have the benefit of a direct line to the PA -- the sound was a bit muddy to my ears, but the low end is much better represented on the recording. There was almost nobody around me, so there is very little audience chatter from what I have heard so far. I'm sure there are better recordings from this show, but this one is quite listenable and I was happy with it.

Notes:
I decided not to tape Saturday's show since it was my first time seeing them with Roth.
Tonight as soon as the lights went out and I hit record, I received no signal from my
battery box so I recorded the other way which meant a very bassy recording. Thank God
there's no distortion, it came out pretty good considering the circumstances. The
performance is way better here than in Detroit. The crowd in the upper bowl was very
lively, every one was dancing, singing, screaming, air guitaring in the aisles, and
I think I captured the sounds of the audience very well in conjunction with the music,
a very good audience feel, so it is an enjoyable listen. We were treated to a stellar
"Romeo Delight" with the "Magic Bus" tease in the middle, they seem to get better with
it at every show and this was the best I've heard so far. The "Spoonful" during
"Somebody Get Me A Doctor" is also very, very, very good. The band seems to be very
tight now, they have their stuff down and it sounds like it. As always, don't sell my stuff
and please only convert to mp3 for iPods and such, DO NOT REDISTRIBUTE THIS IN MP3. THAT
GOES FOR ANY PERSONAL FORUMS WHO HOST BOOTLEGS, DO NOT POST THIS IN MP3. If you want to
share, help people get the quality version. Thank you.

Comments:

This recording came out a lot better than I expected. I had attended a show at the Target Center some years ago, and I remember the sound being rather mediocre at best. This time it was much, much better.

The recording suffers from a few minor glitches at the start. 5 minutes before the show started, the venue was literally half empty. My seat was in the back row of the first upper level on Eddie's side of the stage. I was a bit concerned this wouldn't be close enough to get a good recording, so I spotted an empty section that was a bit closer to the stage. This is where I recorded the first song. However, toward the end of the song one of the ushers came up to me and said, "Show me your ticket!" (you can hear this on the recording) Apparently a whole group of people with tickets in the section I had invaded showed up at all at the same time!

I stalled the best I could so the song could end, then there's a slight static interruption. I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but it apparently had something to do with me turning around and moving back. I was going up some steps, so I must have jolted the Edirol or pulled on a cable too hard. I wasn't moving too gracefully either, as I injured both of my ankles last week and could barely walk, much less climb steps. I tried to walk backwards facing the stage as best as I could, but then there were more steps and this little interference happens again right before the second song.

By this time I've moved closer to my actual seat, but I'm still greedy and staying a bit closer than I'm supposed to be, in another empty section. By this time, the arena has suddenly gotten quite full - tons of last minute arrivals. Sure enough, at the second song some guy shows up and I'm in his seat! (you can hear this also) Once more, a tiny dropout occurs. It's crazy, I know. Maybe just bad karma for stealing other people's seats? ;)

So I finally decided to retreat to my real seat. I should have done this from the start, as the sound was better there anyway. After this, the recording is flawless with no more glitches.

Unfortunately at this point I realized that I had just lost my ticket! I figured I must have dropped it from moving around so much, but I had no idea where and I certainly didn't want to move around any more. So now I was terrified that I was going to get thrown out of the show for not having a ticket.

About 10 minutes later, here comes the usher who moved me from my first seat. I was just about ready to be contfronted again, but luckily she was just showing some people to their seats next to me.

One more strange occurrence during the show... Some freak just wandered up into our section while we were all standing up. He just went directly behind me, faced my seat, and started grabbing onto this girl in the section above during Jamie's Cryin'. This went on for several minutes. Not only was the guy invading my space, I thought his bullshit babbling was going to be on the recording. Fortunately, you can't hear him. But after the song you can hear me saying, "Alright man, you good?", which managed to get rid of him.

Once the show was over, what did I see next to my feet? My ticket, of course. But I could swear it wasn't there before!
