Notes:
I made a trip out to Kansas City to see a Van Halen friend who resides in Springfield, MO, who road-tripped himself and brought one of his friends. Fortunately, I had a blast in spite of the bad performance by the band. To read up on my review of this performance and my time in Kansas City, go here:
http://www.diamonddavidleeroth.com/...php?topic=18639
As far as the recording goes, it would be a solid A if not for the loud, booming bass element. I didn't feel like equalizing the bass, and no volume adjustment was needed, so I did not change the audio properties of my master recording at all. So this is the raw master recording; the only editing was cutting up the WAV's and converting to FLAC.
With respect to the bass issue, I set the battery box to a 95 Hz rolloff as I have done on all the other shows I've taped with this gear, but the bass is nevertheless too loud. The bass was very loud and thumping where I was sitting, so I guess in that sense you're getting a good representation of what it sounded like from my seat. I was sitting next to a wall which kind of divides the sections of the upper bowl of the Sprint Center, so this may have contributed or caused the bass boom. If someone wants to remaster and get rid of the excess bass, go for it. Even with the bass issue, I think it's far and away my best Van Halen recording, and it holds its own pretty well with the best recordings so far on this tour.
Otherwise, the recording is surprisingly up front for a nosebleed section recording, and very clear with almost no audience chatter. There is good dynamic range and good stereo separation as this time, I had the time to get set up properly. I made sure to sit basically motionless the entire time to get a nice, consistent sound throughout.
Between "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "1984" I decided to goof off and state the band, venue, city and date, along with stating that there will be an encore, in homage to the taper of Van Halen, Greensboro February 3, 1984 who said something similar in his recording. After "Jump," I also decided to ask for the opinions of the two people I saw the show with, and give my own opinion, in tribute to the taper of Van Halen, Philadelphia March 21, 1984 and his friend Gary C. who did the same thing 23 years ago. Finally, this recording is "marked" by my friend intentionally blowing a whistle at a few points, most of them at the end of the show, which is "homage" to the notorious horn that marked the Van Halen, Oakland June 11, 1981 audience recording.
Finally, if any of you heard/saw someone playing piano at the Holiday Inn Aladdin in Kansas City until 2:30 AM after the show, that was me.
FFP, shntool results and ticket are included.

Personal notes:
"I will back up Lou's comments to a point: Yes, the show was somewhat of a letdown for me. After having never seen VH with DLR at the helm, hearing all the latest bootlegs from this tour, and viewing what few full-length videos have been made available from this tour, I was really psyched to this show. What I saw on Friday night was, more or less, somewhat of a disappointment. There were some personal hi-lights ("Everybody Wants Some!!" being one of them), but if I had to use any term to describe the show as a whole, it would be "rushed". Everything I have heard/seen on every '07 tour bootleg to date was NOT present that evening. It was as though they were obviously there just to collect that night's fee for playing, and then be on their way. But, having never seen this version of the band live, I was still happy I went to this show. After all, who knows what the future will hold for Van Halen once this tour is complete.
We had, in my opinion, very good seats, until we were moved to another section. The section we were in originally was the exact section I was hoping to get when the tickets went on sale. My wife broke her ankle a few weeks prior to the show, so security was kind enough to move us one section over to an enclosed area meant for disabled people, in order to prevent people from stepping on her cast. This shift in seating was a dream come true and made for a nice recording. I had the PA's pointed directly at me, nobody standing behind me, or next to me, and the people in front of us were located about 5 steps down with a glass partition that ran up to my waist separating us, which greatly prevented any of the usual drunk-talk bullshit. Basically, my wife & I had our own little private section. I had my gear strapped to my chest, thus I was able to get a nice, clear recording.
Funny side-note: at one point, right before the show started, the security supervisor for that section walked up to us to see that we were okay, and, I still had my gear affixed to my chest while we were seated. As he sat down to speak to me, he didn't even notice that my mic was plainly staring him in the face.
The acoustics in the venue were much better than I expected, seeing as how it had just opened up a few weeks prior to the show. This was definitely the best recording I have ever done at an indoor venue and is damn near flawless. Short of plugging my gear into the mixing desk, I couldn't have dreamed of a better recording.
I omitted a small portion from Alex's solo where he dives into the synthesized latin beats, something he's done as part of his solo since '95. Seeing as how the band were quickly going from one song to the next, I knew I’d have very little time to change out discs, so I sacrificed that part of his solo. And, as I said previously, since it's nothing we haven't heard him do since '95, I figured it's nothing anyone would miss.
A major "Thank You" to "Uncle" bobS23 for the transferring, mastering, and posting process of this show. He works his magic like no other! Enjoy the show, everyone!"

Van Halen
10.30.07
"Balcony 316"
Boston, Ma
TD Banknorth Garden
Recorded by Tony> Balcony Sec.316
Remixed and Mastered by VOODOO
Linege info: Olympia DVR>EZwma>WAV>CD-R>Sound Forge 9.0c (WAV)>
(extensive)EQ>Wave Hammer -4dB, 1.5:1 Compression>Normalize RMS to -16dB>
Notes from VOODOO:
The original recording was directly to compressed WMA format,
so most of integrity of the audio recording was lost in the master recording.
The original recording was very hot with a lot of clipping.
Also, as with most of the shows on this tour, the overall sound was muddy and bassy,
so a lot of the lower frequencies were removed or pulled way down.
The mid range frequencies were also very hot, so I cut them between -15dB to -30dB.
There was a lot of clapping and screaming,
which I did my best to control with the Sound Forge Wave Hammer tool set to 1.5:1 compression at -4dB.
This was a pretty difficult show to mix, but I think given the source,
it turned out pretty well.
I hope everyone can enjoy this show for what it is and be grateful for the dude who unexpectedly
wound up at the show and realized he still had his digital voice recorder on him.
This may be the only copy of this show we'll ever see.
Thanks to the taper Tony...wherever you are!

Notes:
I was thinking about driving down to this show all week, and I finally pulled the trigger the day before, securing a floor seat on TicketBastard. I drove down to this sucker and pulled off one of the best recordings of this tour, IMHO. Because I was on the floor, security was all around and I really had to wait until the house lights went down to get the mics exactly where I wanted them. I accomplished this a minute into "You Really Got Me" and from there on the sound is clear, crisp, well balanced and up front. There is very little audience chatter, and the whistles, claps and screams are pretty quiet other than at the beginning of "You Really Got Me." There are a few occasions where people are walking in front of me, so the sound will change on those occasions, but only for a few seconds at that. I felt no need to adjust anything so here is the raw master recording.
I would also like to thank the person sitting immediately to my right in seat 13 who saw that I was wearing mics, recognized the mission and without my knowing it until the show was over, laid low to help me out. Hopefully he'll show up to comment on this show.
To get my review of the actual show itself, which I thought was a great performance, check out http://www.diamonddavidleeroth.com/...php?topic=18674

P.S. Please do not send me any more private messages about 24 bit. I am tired of answering them and I don't know half as much as other people do about this subject. If you have a question, post it in the thread. Thanks!
P.P.S. PLEASE LIBERATE Toronto 7 October 2007, Minneapolis 24 October 2007 and Boston 30 October 2007. If you are holding any one of those back, please understand that if I wanted to, I could do the same thing to you. I could hoard this recording, but I am not doing that. I am sure you have downloaded stuff you've never dreamed you'd hear for free, so please return the favor to the community.

Van Halen
Meadowlands Izod Center
East Rutherford, New Jersey
United States of America
November 3, 2007
Notes: I was going to call this one "Meltdown at the Meadowlands," but after I heard the sound quality, not to mention the fact that it is incomplete, I decided to pass on the formalities such as titles, artwork, etc. The show is in the category of forgettable (or unforgettable..depends how you look at things). I guess the high point of the evening's drama was Eddie Van Halen stomping around like a 3-year old because his guitar cable kept getting tangled (as he yanked on it violently)...no wait...it would have to be him screaming..SCREAMING at the tech guys on the side of the stage for the better part of the show...no...the part where he flipped the monitor over, because it was either too loud, or he didn't like what was coming out of it..no...maybe it was when he picked said monitor up and threw it across the stage...NO..I got it..it was when he proceeded to pick up the monitor and throw it OFF the stage. That was it.
I'm not making any of this up.
There were some other noteworthy occurrences..like during one of Ed's fits, where he was switching guitars.."and the Cradle Will Rock" starts..only problem is..Ed is not holding a guitar..but it starts nonetheless, with the swoosing flanged guitar..that's he's not playing..it's pre-recorded..so is the rhythm part..I'm pretty sure it's a keyboard, but I never noticed it, because he was usually playing. This show seemed to measure up to the KC show everyone was talking about..except Dave was great. I gained a newfound respect for him tonight, as he was the consumate professional as his bandmate stomped, sneared and screamed through 90% of the show, during which he paid little attention to his playing, stopping at times, screwing up at others. After the monitor toss, he pretty much threw and swatted at anything and everything in his path.
I feel bad for Wolfie too. I can tell this is all getting to him fast. He looked like he wanted to be ANYWHERE else for pretty much the entire show. At times I caught him staring at Ed with this "what the f*ck??" look on his face. At one point, after one of his meltdowns, I guess Ed realized that yeh..there are like 10,000 people watching this, he tried to do his goofy dancing and jumping pikes, then he goes over to Wolfie's side and picks up a straw cowboy hat, puts it on, then tries to put it on Wolf, only Wolfs backs up, slaps the hat away, then proceeds to kick it off the stage into the crowd.
This thing is unravelling..fast. After the monitor throwing incident, Ed came back up and looked almost possessed. Very sad indeed. Sad for everyone involved. Sad for the fans that shelled out $500 to be in the VIP circle. Actually, it was sad for any fan who shelled out even $1 to see this charade tonight. Saddest of all for the multi-millionaire guitarist whose band is making 1.5 million per show that he can't put everything aside for 2 hours a day, play his music and act like a swell guy.
In any event..here it is. The recording matches the performance. BTW - I'm not on the whole VH-bashing bandwagon either. I'm just really disgusted at the show Ed turned in last night. I considered not going to MSG next week, but figured I might as well, and hopefully go out on a high note.
I also tried some new mics on this one, and was not happy at ALL with the results. I'm going back to my old setup for the next show. Could have been any combo of factors though..sour spot for recording, bad mix, bad mic placement. Who knows. Couldn't have happened at a better show though.

Don't know what the other guy who posted a partial of this show was talking about. I was on the floor approx. 30 rows back in front of the stack on the right, 6 rows FOB, and the sound was great, though unnecessarily very loud, but it looked to me like Eddie was pushing 16 5000 Watt Amps on stage. Saw no temper tantrums, though my wife said she saw him adjust (not throw) a monitor. Old farts like us remember when musicians fiddled on stage with their guitar cords. Eddies appeared more like a heavy rope, which my have something to do with all the Wattage he was pushing. So we saw him tug on it a few times, but I did not see any attitude whatsoever. Seemed to me like the love fest between Ed and Dave was still going strong, or at least they pretended pretty well that it was, Anyway, we took the 16 year old, he was not impressed with the band until they played Magic Bus ,,, at which point Van Halen garnered the kid's respect and turned my little Who freak into one of their newest fans. Here it is, warts and all, but very few glitches in this recording, plus the sound is my typical high grade, unlike most other recording I have heard from this tour thusfar.

This is an unreleased source from JimL and BTB Productions. It took me a while to get it mastered and uploaded, because of Sound Forge issues and the holidays, but I wanted to get this seeded before the new week began. Enjoy and, as always, many, many thanks go out to JimL for his efforts and his exceptional recordings!

Notes:
This was another last minute decision to drive down. I intentionally bought seats that would be in line with the speaker stacks so as to have a better shot at a good recording. I believe this is on par with the quality of my Washington, D.C. 1 November recording, except this has a little less treble, more bass, and less reverb. Roth's voice is more prominent in the mix. Like the Washington recording I would give this one an "A." It's not soundboard quality like the one source of East Rutherford 3 November, but it's nice and clear, pretty up front, and almost no audience noise during the songs. The only sounds you'll hear are from the two idiots to my right with their occasional screams. Screamers suck. A couple of times I had to twist and turn to accommodate people walking in front of me, but the loss in sound quality for those few seconds is very minor and is barely noticeable. Overall I'm quite pleased with how this one came out.
Contrary to popular opinion I do not think this was one of the band's better performances. Or should I say, one of Eddie's better performances. To read up on my complete review of the show, go here:

FFP file and shntool results included.
P.S. All indications are that Toronto 7 October and Boston 30 October were recorded and will be shared. Still looking for someone to come forward with Minneapolis 24 October to round out the tour so far. Please don't hoard...the likelihood is about zero that you'd get something like a pristine complete Oakland 1981 video for it anyway.

I'm too lazy and tired to do a review. I agree with just about everything here:
http://www.diamonddavidleeroth.com/...php?topic=18206
In that thread, someone randomly took pics of the crowd and I happen to be in one of them. Look really closely and you can make out the mics attached to my collar.
This is possibly the best show of this tour, and unquestionably my best recording on this tour. It helps when you have kickass seats, scored by SensibleShoes over at DDLR.com. So give her some credit for how this sucker turned out. The only thing that you could nitpick on this recording are a couple of idiot screamers who are on there from time to time, and people that kept getting up forcing me to twist and turn my body. Since I can't control that, I'm still giving this an A+ grade, fuck it.
Thanks to Shoes and twonabomber for doing the heavy lifting that made this trip possible for my friend and I. It was also great meeting up with TommyV, Guwapo, jgdrag and everyone's spouses and families. I had a wonderful time!

Bell Center
Nov 10 2007
Taper: MicroMagnon, the stone-age taper.
Source: Source: SP CMC-4s (AT-853s) > SPSB-6 battery box (107 Hz bass roll-off) > Creative Nomad JB3 @ 44.1 KHz Normalized in Sound-Forge, split with CDWave.
Sound quality is much better on the recording than it was to my ears inside the Bell Center. I was in section 121, facing the stage, in the left corner.
Let me make this straight, I didn’t enjoy this concert. I saw Van Halen in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1984, and I was awaiting this one ever since. Truth is, despite the hype, I felt it wasn’t a return to fine form. DLR, I’m sorry, couldn’t hold what’s left of his voice. Just check Cradle will Rock. His banter isn’t half as entertaining as it used to be. The band hardly used the catwalk, which ended-up, IMO, as a barrier between the crowd and the band. The sound was horrible (though my microphones filtered out most of the distortion) To quote a friend, they sounded in a hurry to get back to their hotel. Sure, Eddie was in fine form. But I find that Aerosmith aged much better. At $160 a ticket, I thought we deserved better.
My friend walked out after five songs. She can be heard asking me in French what I think of it, before complaining about the embarassingly horrible sound. And then telling me she was going home to rent Spinal Tap…
Anyway, I taped it, and now I’m sharing it, because I’m sure most people liked it anyway.

This was my first time seeing Van Halen in concert and I can't say I was excited, I mean, I was overjoy having a chance to see them live, but my expectations were, perhaps, a little bit too high, but it was a 'nice' show overall. I can't help, but point out the crapy sound cranking out in the amphitheatre during the WHOLE evening. This IS the worst show soundwise I've attended and it's also my worst recording of all the shows I've taped so far at the Bell Centre.
The bass is distorded, no bass drum beat apparent, so-so guitar tuning, only the vocals were a little high on this concert. The guys at the sound board should get their pink slips! I got the impression they were trying to get their act together during the whole show, the concert sounded like a 'soundcheck'. The band sounded pretty much out of synch on a lot of occasions in my opinion, but Dave's voice still has it's punch, he nabbed the high notes. Too bad Michael Anthony wasn't part of this, for purists that would've been the perfect reunion tour.
Thanks,
Isa.

Notes:
My eighth and likely final stop for Van Halen in 2007, unless someone wants to subsidize a trip for me out West. I had nosebleed seats, but the best possible situation for a nosebleed--relatively close to the PA stacks, front row of the section so no one in front of me, and some empty seats in my row which means I got to spread out. There were a couple of bimbos to my right who were talking and getting up and down but they weren't much of a factor all things considered.
This is a very clear, consistent sounding recording throughout. Because it's nosebleed, it doesn't have the dynamic range of Washington 1 November or Montreal 10 November. The treble is lacking and there's a slight echo, but overall it's a very pleasant listen. This is about as good as I could have possibly expected this recording to come out given where I was sitting.
As for the show itself, awesome show. Eddie was definitely on. What a great way to cap off my run of Van Halen shows. Hopefully 2008 will bring more road-tripping, fun and of course more recordings!

Notes:
I had seats in the upper level but in the first row,so I attached my mic to the railing in front of me and left it there for the whole show.I got a much better recorded than I thought I was gonna get. Everything is clear and no obnoxious crowd at all.I gave a some slight EQ to give it some crispness.I've attached 2 radio ads,the one on the second disc is for the NJ show which I thought I was gonna attend but didn't end up going to,so I attached it anyway just so it wouldn't go to waste.

Notes: Seats were located in the upper level. Mics were clipped to my hat.Somewhat of rough start for me during "you really got me", mics were not ready yet..Sound improves after that song..I would say the sound was good, unlike other shows from this tour. Not many loud folks around me at all, so the sound is clear. I was far away almost but dead center.Guitar was a little low at first, Dave's mics would cut out every so often but nothing major..All the song's were performed very well..The only part that dragged a little was the guitar solo. It was good, just a little long and maybe a little uninspired..They seemed to be having a great time, Wolfie was sounding great to my ears.Alex, what can you say, he was a rock and grooved his ass off.
...Enjoy the show....I know I did...

For my first recording, it turned out better than I could ever hope it would. It's raw and straight from the Hi-MD recorder, to my hardrive, to you. No EQ, no volume boost. Nothing. My battery box has no bass roll off, so be forwarned, this recording has LOTS of bottom end. If any of you experts out there think you can re-master and clean this up a bit, go for it. All I request is that you send me a heads up, so I can grab a copy. ;)
As with most recordings, it starts out a little rough during You Really Got Me as I was still setting my gear up. I was fumbling around with one of my clip-on mics, trying to attach it properly to the collar of my jacket. So as a result, you will hear a couple of rough crackles during the first minute or so. After that, it's all good. As for crowd noise, it's not bad.....except for my buddy next to me, who couldn't contain himself from the occasional scream, or singing along with some of the choruses. I had to give him the "shut the fuck up!" look I don't know how many times. Anyways, as I said, I'm very happy with the results of my first recording. I hope you are, too. What a kick ass, awesome show. Man, was it great to see Dave and Ed share the stage again, after so many years.
Long live Van Halen!!
Enjoy!

Notes:
My second ever recording. First with my new battery box with bass roll off option.
Sound is good, still a bit too much bottom end, though. Nonetheless, a very enjoyable listen.
Long live Van Halen!!
Enjoy!

Notes:
The show was amazing. I couldn't believe how good they sounded. Also, I couldn't believe how bad our seats were. We were as far back and as far up as you can get. Key Arena sounds pretty crappy from most places, but this really made the recording boomy and distant. To improve the sound, I ran it through T-RackS 24. I cut the midrange a bit to tame the harsh sound, and employed a 50Hz low cut to deal with the cavernous sound. Personally, I think it improved the sound of the recording a bit without having to compress it to death. It's not my best recording by far, but it's one of the better sounding ones I've done in Key Arena. Maybe if they build a new arena for the Sonics (and for all the other great events they claim a new arena is necessary for) they'll pay more attention to acoustics. If they don't, I may move to Oklahoma City.
Thanks to all the other VH tapers. Here's to hoping that VH keeps touring into next summer and plays at the Gorge!
Thanks also to the author of Trader's Little Helper. What an amazing application.

Recorded from the back right corner of the arena, 2nd level, 6th row. During the end of "Unchained" I
had to piss so bad I couldn't hold it any longer so I set my recording gear down on my jacket and went to
the can. That's why the sound is a bit muffled on "I'll Wait", which luckily for me is probably my least
favorite of the David Lee Roth songs! I'm sorry for this mishap all you hardcore Van Halen fans but you
can blame the girl behind me (who I passed a joint to) for giving me a beer during the show! Even though
I had security standing about 6 feet away from me on either side I also managed to get about 20 minutes of
video footage near the end of the show which you can check out on youtube here:

The photos are from the Calgary Sun website which didn't mention who the photograper was.
This was my 1st time seeing Van Halen live and it kicked ass! Long live Van Halen with David Lee Roth!
I forgot to mention in the info file it was recorded by eargogglez. (eargogglez@yahoo.ca)

Comments/Review:
"Recorded from Row 15 - Floor Section, centre of that row. I was only two rows away from the crescent-shaped stage catwalk, so I got some *very* nice close-up views of David Lee Roth and Wolfgang Van Halen! I attended this concert exactly a week after I saw Spice Girls in Vancouver on the first date of their world tour (which is a story on its own, ha ha!), and I really wanted to attend another big show to finish off 2007, and I'd never seen Van Halen before, so I decided to get my ticket the night before...lucked out, because they'd released some floor section seats (Which had been 'sold out' for a long time) before the show, so I got a very nice seat!
This concert was a blast, although not being familiar with most of Van Halen's catalogue, I just *listened* to the music and enjoyed it, took it for what it was...and awesome songs they were! The band was very energetic. They seemed to enjoy themselves, and David was very humourous (yet slightly raunchy) with some of his comments, so it was a nice change for me, having attended more 'serious' concerts in 2007 (The Police, Roger Waters, Spice Girls) previously. Also, I couldn't help but notice how normal looking Wolfgang Van Halen is...! He looks like he could be any normal kid from Edmonton, and he certainly wouldn't be out of place if he were living here, ha! (I wish his bass was louder and more boomy, but for someone who hasn't been playing bass long, he's not bad at all! And I'm speaking as a musician myself!)
All in all, was a very enjoyable concert! Enjoyed myself :)
Only complaint was the guy in front of me smoking some bad cigar(ettes?)....security took his smokes, needless to say :p
Oh and yes, my recording! ...I daresay it's my best recording in terms of quality out of my four recordings from the concerts I'd been to in 2007 (none have been disappointing really, to tell you the truth!), especially in terms of quality. And for once, I'm pleased I can actually really hear the audience very well on my recording! (Usually, my mikes seem to lower the audience noise!) Anyways, that's all for my comments! (Sorry if it was too long!)
Enjoy!
