| From what I have read in PC World it seems that more people prefer XP still due to Vista being unstable and too new. PC's are still coming with XP as the OS but I believe Microsoft will be ending that this summer. There is a petition somewhere on the internet that 800,000 people have signed so far to keep XP on the market longer until Vista gets some much needed upgrades. If it were me I would stick with an XP machine for now. When Vista gets to be more reliable than you can upgrade. The biggest problem with Vista right now is driver issues and DRM. |

| Go with XP. Or even Ubuntu. Since you're buying a new computer, you might want to check out Dell's preconfigured Ubuntu systems here. |

| I think the drawback with xp is the fact that it will be the next microsoft os to be phased out and no longer supported like all the previous ms os's. If it were me, I'd go with vista. I've been using it since day one and it's been very reliable. And better yet, switch to Linux. |

As far as duo core or quad core...faster processors are always better but they generate more heat which, depending on the system, may require a bigger box to accommodate the dispensation systems. Quad core boxes tend to be a little bigger and are still pretty new but I haven't heard of any problems with them. Just make sure that the area where you put this thing is well ventilated.
I agree with Scott and Stickman on operating systems. Stick with XP until Vista becomes stable. Be careful not to get a Vista system and then figure you can always reload XP later if you don't like it. I had someone at work get a Vista system working on that assumption but when he tried to install XP, there were no drivers for some of his system components since they were only intended for use with a Vista system. Also, Vista isn't completely backwards compatible (wasn't that the title of a Tubes album? ;) ) with all the software that runs smoothly with XP so your authoring software may run into problems. |

| XP all the way. Not only is XP more stable, Vista is a resource hog. |

Make sure that whatever apps you like, support multi-core technology. For example, Sony Vegas didn't add multi-core stuff till version 6 (I think). While the programs will still work, if they don't take advantage of the other cores, they'll just sit there doing nothing. |

I was in the market for a new computer and loved XP cause my wife's laptop has Vista and I couldn't find any decent authoring or video editing software for her laptop.. I kept seeing these nice computers with Vista being sold for a decent price but I wanted a new computer so I can start authoring again and knowing these new computers I might need to add extra hardware to get it to do the job I wanted too.
Vista isn't too bad but you need at least 2GB of memory to get it to run smooth and my wife's laptop came with 1GB of memory and ended up putting 4GB of memory. I see Vista with a couple of glitches so thats why I decided to go with XP. I even had a hardtime finding an anti virus for Vista cause at the time there wasn't much out there that was compatible with Vista.
I had a friend tell me about www.pcclub.com and there you can pick what you want on your system and see how much it would cost you as you add hardware. I ended up trying to create my own computer and printing it out and going to the actual store PC Club that is on my route (UPS Driver) and told them what I wanted.. I let them know what I wanted to use it for and showed them all the stuff I printed and they worked with me.
I ended getting a Dual Core 3.0, 9600GT video card, two LG 20X Dual Layer burners, two 500GB hardrives, and 2 GB of memory cause they told me I won't need anymore cause videocard will do it all for me and adding more memory will actually slow down computer. . They told me my computer would be fast and do everything I wanted it to do without any hold ups.. I have had it for a couple of days now and my system SCREAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMS!! It does everything in a blink of an eye and now the past few days I have been spending time adding all my software and thats no fun but I'm hoping I will have everything installed by the end of the weekend. |

Once you've had Mac, you'll never go back. Or is it "once you've had Undercover Brother, there is no other"...
Either way, if you really want to author DVDs, get a Mac. |
