It's not as 'out there' as it sounds. When trading/torrenting audio and video boots they are to be accompanied with file containing a computer generated mathematical sum. I use a program called MD5 summer. I just noticed when comparing those sums to F.L.A.C. fingerprints (a simular looking sum for lossless F.L.A.C. audio files) with a boot I uploaded today they do not match. I guess i never paid enough attention to them until now. I checked other boots and they do not match either. Maybe they are two different things altogether? |

There are no dumb questions ...
Checksums are calculated using the entire file. FingerPrints are calculated using only the audio portion of the file. If the Header information on a file changes the Checksum will be different but the FingerPrint will not change. Some argue that the FingerPrint must be better since it only looks at the audio portion of the file. Personally I don't know why you'd go about converting the file from one format to another, except for personal listening. Once you have the file and it is good ... leave it alone! I know some people have converted SHN to FLAC to sontinue to share and that just doesn't make sense to me. Once you have a good file ... leave well enough alone. Personally, I use both Checksums AND FingerPrints. I also don't convert files except for personal listening I always share the original files in the original formats.
I hope that helps. |
