My personal beliefs about the matter:

I don't think Mike could make it on his own... he's not the leader type and I don't think he does much in the way of song writing. He's an OK bass player and a great backing vocalist - but in terms of musical skills...that's not much of a resume.

He didn't need to be a leader or song writer in Van Halen and Van Halen songs don't require great bass playing. So he was very successful within the framework of Van Halen as a band. Basically all he had to do was go out and play hard and get the crowd going ~ and do it in a way that didn't detract or steal any of Dave or Ed's limelight. And he did that perfectly.

I don't think Mike was ever a true "insider" in Van Halen. And when Sammy came along, he found a friend in another guy who wasn't a true insider. Hence the great friendship that developed between Mike and Sam.

Does Sammy typically refer to Van Halen as "Van Hagar?"

I read this interview and this struck me as odd....and had me wondering if it was from an actual interview and not something that someone made up.

I thought that was odd too... I figure the writer took a liberty there? But I wouldn't be surprised if most of it is B.S.

I agree with you 110% on that. I'd like to see him distance himself from Sam though.. do some all-star thing.. anything.

Ross CAT-Lastly, you toured with DAVID LEE ROTH back in 2003 any chance you’d be willing to set aside differences and give VAN HALEN fans the “Best of Both Worlds” with all 5 guys touring together?
SAMMY-As far as that goes that’s just not something I’m really interested in doin again

Don't worry Spambo, we're not interested in it either - now go write a love song.

I like both era's of Van halen but that was indeed a funny post. :D
