To keep it simple...as I understand it....Lossy is when a recording is compressed to the point that it loses quality. An example of a lossy format is an MP3, which doesn't sound as good or as crisp as FLAC format. The more a file is compressed, the worse it sounds.
Hopefully I got that right and it is clear....I am not exactly a tech guy. |

How can one tell if the recording is lossy? |

Usually in the way it sounds but if you are suspicious the best way to tell is look at the audio in a WAV editor. |

Maybe my ears are just to use to bad bootlegs :D . I would say it is not an mp3 recording. I do know it is one of my favorite audio bootlegs I have. |

Its really hard to tell if a boot is lossy or not by listening to it. Just to be safe you should look at it in a frequency or spectral analyzer.... ;) |

It depends on how good your ears are and what the bit rate used is. If it is a high bits rate than you may be right. I couldn't hear the difference with 128k MP3s for years and then I started listening to them against the really thing and then boy I could hear the difference. Today, even with my bad ears, I can hear how bad a 128k MP3 sounds. If you get up to 256k or 320k I don't think I'd necessarily hear the difference but that doesn't mean the difference isn't there. And I think I have pretty bad ears. Someone with "good" ears might be able to tell the difference. I bet anyone could tell the difference if your bit rate got down to 32k or 24k. Having said all that you are correct the best way to tell is to look at the Spectral Analyzer. Then you should be able to tell for certain.
One last point ... just because you don't hear the difference doesn't mean someone else won't hear the difference; just because you don't hear the difference doesn't mean the difference doesn't exist. |

I think I know why I have given up on trading audio shows. It just ain't worth put up with all this shit. Two of the last three audio trades have gone south and now the third one is looking that way aswell.
Yea, tape to tape caused loss of gen, but you did not have to deal with all this other crap. Maybe I'm just fustrated at the moment.................than again, maybe not. |
