Van Halen Tour Grosses More Than $93 Mil
June 05, 2008, 10:05 AM ET
Ray Waddell, Nashville

Though not without setbacks, the Van Halen reunion tour ended up a massive success, wrapping June 2 in Grand Rapids, Mich., with a total gross of more than $93 million and close to one million in attendance from 74 shows.

The tour, news of which first broke on Billboard.com in January 2007, featured founding members David Lee Roth, and Eddie and Alex Van Halen, along with Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen.

After initially being set up as an amphitheater tour for the summer of 2007, the Live Nation-produced reunion temporarily derailed when guitarist Eddie Van Halen entered rehab. But it was resurrected as a fall arena run that stretched into 2008.

The tour was delayed again in March because of health issues for Eddie, then returned to the road in April to finish with a flourish.

The shows marked the first time Roth had performed with the band in more than 23 years. Van Halen's handlers say it was the top-grossing tour in the band's history.

Of course I have to ask the inevitable comparison question - how does this compare to the 2004 tour?

30.2 Million, less than a 1/3 of the current VH Tour.

No wonder if you look at the price of the tickets and the All Access prices.

According to pollstar, VH 2004 grossed 54.3 million, whereas VH 2007/08 grossed 93 million. A difference of 38.7 million

No, this tour did less dates.

2007/2008 = 75 paid shows (I took out the corporate gig)
2004 = 80 paid shows

Wow, didn't realize they did so many shows in 2004. I guess because they came back in the area a 2nd time this tour I thought they did more.

Hmmm, I wonder why my number (75) is different than their number (74)....? Maybe they aren't counting the Tiger Woods show?

I can name 30+ people who went to see them on this tour who did NOT see them in 2004.

I do have one buddy that went to both shows and he said it was obvious that 2004 did not sell out (about 80% of capacity) while 2008 was very obvious.
