Smash Mouth played over here at Aloha Tower last night to a pretty small crowd. They were ok - seemed to be featuring a new guitarist - and played pretty well with decent audience reaction. After about 90 minutes they left the stage for a couple of minutes - they still hadn't played All-Star so everyone knew they'd come back for that. What I didn't expect was that they'd come back and launch into Running With The Devil! It was twice as loud and the previous tunes and the (small) audience went nuts. Then, they transitioned straight into Ain't Talkin' Bout Love with eveyone going crazy on the "Hey Hey Hey's". After a big reaction to that they stopped and soaked in the adoration for a moment and then the guitarist teased us with the opening riff to You Really Got me. People went nuts again so Steve Harwell walked out into the crowd and spoke for a second and they they launched into the whole song. It was pretty great. My wife said to me during this one that they play Van Halen stuff better than they play their own stuff! Pretty funny. Finally, when that was over they played All-Star and the show was over. I don't know if they always do this, but it was a great surprise for me. I was even wearing my VH shirt from this tour.
Oh, and I know they must be fans because I actually saw Steve Harwell (the lead singer) at the VH show I went to in Vega$.
Anyway, they put on a good show and it's too bad more people didn't catch it. |

I think I remember reading that VH was an influence, but you would never know it. :D |
