|
|
| I am in the market for another hard-drive, after maxing out my other one. This 500GB Maxtor external seems like a good deal for 100 bucks, final price. Does anyone know if these are reliable and a good bargain? Thanks for your time. :thumb: |

| I have a Maxtor One-Touch (?) external and it's worked very well for me. If you have a FireWire (IEEE1394) port on your computer, look for a model that has the same and use that over USB. |

| Does the one touch external back up the entire hard-drive automatically, or can I choose what files it copies. I'm looking to rip data dvd's onto a hard-drive, and not looking for a whole computer back up. Thanks for your help. |

All depends on what software that comes with it, or what software you choose to use. AFAIK the software that comes with current OneTouch drives is different than the software that came with mine (as it's a bit older now). Plus different models come with different software... |

I've had 2 Maxtor One-Touch drives go bad on me within months of each other, and a friend down the street had one go bad on him. I guess they could have just been a bad run.
What was weird was the drives power up, but Windows wouldn't even know a drive was hooked up (never assigned a letter, nor would it show up anywhere in Windows). However, I took the hard drive out of the enclosure and put it directly in my tower and it was recognized and worked fine. I'm guessing it's something with the enclosure went bad??? And as luck would have it, each one was less than 2 months after their warranty expired...
My buddy hasn't gotten his to work, but he hasn't felt comfortable taking it apart. |

| I have 2 Maxtor 300-gig drives and they've been good to me. I just picked up a Western Digital 1TB drive for $250 shipped. Amazing how cheap drives are now. |

| I've had a Maxtor 300GB one-touch drive for a while and it has been great. Then again I don't use it on a daily basis and since it is external when I'm not using it I have it turned off. Still I love it. |

| I had a few problems with 3 Maxtor Drives. Seems to be the bigger they are the more problems i have had. The 500GB seems to by my problem. |

| Lacie drives also have a good reputation if you happen to see those on sale anywhere, but usually are a little more expensive. |

I never install the backup software that comes with these external drives. I know what I want to backup and I just do it manually. I don't want a software program tying up my system and doing it for me. Just my preference...YMMV. |

When I modded my xbox I went with a WD because I heard the Maxtors got to hot and in my XBMC box, I can't afford or have the time to worry about heat with the extra 320 gig hard drive, jewel LEDs and hard drive LED indicator even with the 12 volt fan mod.
As guitard said, I want to backup what I want when I want |

| I use an Acomdata 500gb hard drive. It works quit nicely, it has a one push button backup that you can set to back up all your important files. Here is a link for http://www.buy.com/prod/acomdata-e5-hybriddrive-500gb-usb-2-0-7200rpm-external-hard-drive/q/loc/101/203532231.html |

| I have a 500 and a 1TB Maxtor external....I had my first 1TB go bad on me and lost about 800 gigs of data that was on it....the problem was that the power went off and I guess it got a shock out of it all....I usually keep them turned off and not plugged into my tower unless I am using them....other than that...I have never had a problem with them...I also do not install any "backup software".....these are for storage. My only suggestion is to keep them turned off and even unplugged (firewire or usb) when not in use. I have had several WD drives go bad on me...so I do not use them in my tower....I used to use Maxtor but now I only use Seagate drives....I just hope the quality always stays the same...I think Maxtor bought them last year. |
