Summer Celebration 1978, The Bill: Van Halen, Bob Seger, Couture, Unknown Local Band
Does anyone else find this surprising? Even in 1978 Van Halen was a little big to be playing a High School, ys they weren't huge but a High School?
Elmer Engel Stadium supposedly holds 7,100, so I think it's possible.... |

Does anyone else find this surprising? Even in 1978 Van Halen was a little big to be playing a High School, ys they weren't huge but a High School? Also look at who else is on the bill ... Bob Seger? Bob Seger is HUGE in Michigan and in 1978 I couldn't imagine he was performing at a High School. This just seems really odd to me. Maybe it is just me.
The original poster of those photos had this to say:
"I took these pics of VH on Aug 19, 1978 when VH opened for Bob Seger at Bay City Central H.S. Engel Stadium.
If you look closely, to the right of Eddie's "time machine"...lol, the two guys in the distance walking away from the stage are Seger's sax player & guitarist... Alto Reed & Drew Abbott."
Sidenote
The bands were part of the Summer Celebration 1978 Festival, they used the school's stadium, the school probably has nothing to do with it. |

So then there's another date problem.... |

The date is correct
The Aug. part at the bottom right of the pictures is probably the month the pics got developed hence the confusion. |

You said, the poster of the photos said, "I took these pics of VH on Aug 19, 1978 when VH opened for Bob Seger at Bay City Central H.S. Engel Stadium."
I'd be curious to know what the schedule of a roadie is like between two shows like this (given the July date is accurate). That drive had to suck. |

It's a good two hours north of here. I have family that lives near there so I may investigate next time I'm up in that area. |

Cool. Check the public library there (I'd call ahead and ask to save yourself a potentially useless trip). Still, I bet the library has a copy of each year's yearbook.

| 3/5/78 Indy. I have a ticket stub (well half of it anyways) around here somewhere. I'll have to try and find that because now that I think about it I'm not positive where it's at and that is bugging me. |
