I think I may have picked up some bug/virus. :furious:
Recently, I started using AVG's new anti-virus version. I'm suspecting that's where the bug is, or got in. On the icon at the very bottom right - it indicated that the "update manager" was not active. I adjusted it, and said I needed to shut down for changes to take place.
Then when my computer rebooted, I selected my user account, and as soon as my desktop showed (only the wallpaper - no shorcuts) - it logged me off automatically. Subsequent attempts to log on to user didn't even get far enough to show my wallpaper - it just immediately logged me off - leaving me unable to do anything.
Any ideas? |

| Try to log on in safe mode and run a virus scan from there. Also try and create a new identity with admin. privileges and use that account to wipe out the bug/virus. If you don't have lavasoft's ad-aware I would recommend it. |

yes I have ad-aware, but haven't run it in about a month. If I could get in, that's the 1st thing I would have done.
How exactly do you log in on safe mode? I've never done it without being prompted.
thanks. |

| While booting (before XP starts), tap F8 until you hear a beep, then you get a prompt. Some computers you can just hold down F8. |

| Do you know for sure that AVG caused this? I downloaded 8.0 but have yet to instal it. they said I had to because 7.5 would no longer get updates. I'm not sure I should install it now. |

| I have the newest version of AVG on the laptop my wife and kids use and it has never caused problems. I'd go ahead and install it. |

Problem was not caused because of AVG ~ just a coincidence that the last thing I did before "meltdown" was run a manual update.
After some advice - I could see the problem was beyond fixing it myself. The repair shop I took it to diagnosed 2 things:
1) my hard drive was failing and 2) the XP service pack 3 that sickman was asking about. |
