In the running for worst song ever. Lyrics, or lack of, are pure garbage. Crank it! Blow out! Woo!
Right up there with Wham bam Amsterdam. I hear you, I was talking more about music than lyrics. |

I agree 100%. Great tunes, but Spambo just ruins so many great ones. I can't stand the 'love' songs.. it really softens them up and makes me want to puke. |

Wow, I feel like I'm reading a links thread from FORD; minus the personal assaults of course. :D
FYI, the "love" aspact of Sammy songs is a pointless argument as the percentage of songs out of the catalogue are low; yet that is one of the main arguments thrown about by CVH people. I personally skip more Dave songs than I do Sammy songs.
Also, I agree that both eras are distinctly different. However, the Sam era may be more polished, it is also way better in terms of song writing. I also can't stand when people say they would enjoy it if it was named Van Halen; that is asinine.
Each era serves a purpose. One is not better than the other. My mood dictates what I listen too. However, I think of the Dave era as a one trick pony and the Sam era as having more variety. I like variety. |

I am with you Blu......looks like we are in the minority on this one. I love both versions but it seems they were more of a band with Sammy in. (excluding the 2004 tour) |

Always the Sammy era for me. With Sammy they had so much more than just "party, party". That kind of stuff eventually gets old. Thats exactly what happened to DLRs solo career.
But with Sammy in the band, you got so much more. Great music, great songs, great lyrics and still the party element was there.
Bring back Sammy :thumb: |

I like both Sam & Dave (and a little Gary occasionally); I agree with Blu, each served a purpose.
As far as the "party, party" w/ Dave, he's one of the few in the business that can still pull it off at his age. It's still fits him and for me, it's one of the many reasons why when I listen to classic VH it puts a big smile on my face! It's all attitude... :D |

I certainly didn't mean for it to sound like a Dave vs Sammy thread from the links. It's a little more civilized here. Basically it boils down to this.
Van Halen with Dave appeals to men, and the party mentality.
Van Halen with Sammy appeals more to women, i.e., When it's love, Can't Stop Lovin' You. Yes there are great rockin out tunes from the Sammy era but for me personally I would rather hear Romeo Delight than Love Walks In.
Either way Van Halen is for everybody no matter what era. The Sammy years certainly widened the fanbase, but all in all it is VAN HALEN and Everybody Wants Some! |

   I never noticed there were vocals on Van Halen's music! I think it was dear old Lou that gave people like me the term "ED-HEADS"
Seriously though for me there's been ups and downs in all 3 singer periods, ok some more than others :D
Thing is, this latest tour has got everyone back buzzing in cvh mode and just playing a Hagar tune for me at the mo sounds so strange, almost dated in a weird sort of way? |

VH1 (the album) came out in the spring of my junior year of high school - and the first three VH concerts I saw were with Dave. I never bought a Sam-era release until Balance came out and didn't see them with Sammy until 2004.
I just never warmed up to the Sammy-era very much. And up until the mid-90s, I had pretty much stopped buying music. But I really liked Sammy before he joined VH - especially his late '70s stuff. Most people have forgotten this, but Sammy was known as a hard-rockin' guitar slinger back in the late '70s.
But much like Nick (Decatone), I've always focused more on Ed's guitar playing more than anything else. But even in that regard, I like the early Van Halen much more than the later stuff (Sam and Gary eras).
So for me it's always been Dave kind of by default... |
