Hey Guys
Wanted to share this story with you all.
The year is 1986, im 13 years old.
Im getting into music and a co-worker from my dad records a cassette tape for me.
When i receive the tape i dont know any of the names on it except ACDC.
Here's the tracklist of the tape:
Side: A
Target - It's Only Love
Rose Tattoo - Rock 'N' Roll Outlaw
Foghat - Rock And Roll Outlaw
Sammy Hagar - Miles From Boredom
Ted Nugent - Wango Tango
ACDC - TNT
Van Halen - Bottoms Up
Van Halen - Outta Love Again
Side: B
Ten Years After - Going Home (Live)
J. Geils Band - Whammer Jammer & Hard Drivin' Man (Live)
Pat Travers - Boom Boom (Out Goes The Lights) (Live)
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Johnny B Goode (Live)
Van Halen - Why Can't This Be Love
Foreigner - Dirty White Boy
So here i am, a 13 year old kid from The Netherlands listening to this music.
It is my first introduction to rock music and especially Van Halen.
Im digging the song: Why can't this be love, i even hear it on the radio overhere, not that much though
So my parents go to a musicstore with this songtitle and they come back with the 5150 Vinyl.
After a while i discover that those other VH songs were sung by a different singer (DLR) :D
I also think to hear that the singer of the song: Miles To Boredom sounds a lot like the singer of Why can't this be love ;)
Anyway.... 22 years later im typing this story looking at my first rock tape laying on my desk.
ps
I found all those songs on cd/mp3 except: Target - It's Only Love (Singer: Jimi Jamison)
If anyone can send me in the right direction i would really appreciate it |

Cool story Dirq. It's funny to look back at those points in your life that shape your musical preferences. I'm not familiar with Target, but I love Jimi Jamison's voice. I'll have to do some digging on them.
I have a cousin who's 15 years older than me. In the mid-70s (when I was 6 or 7), he lived in a trailer on a big piece of land behind his parents' (my aunt and uncle's) house. I walked in one day and he was playing Kiss Alive and I thought it was great, I'd never heard such power...lol. So he took it off the turntable and gave it to me to take home and listen. He also gave me Beck Bogart and Appice, Mountain's Climbing, and Led Zeppelin IV.
When I brought those back, he'd give me a couple more albums to take and listen to. Until that, the only music I knew was watching the Saturday night music shows my parents watched (Grand Ole Opry, Porter Wagoner, Hee-Haw, etc) :yell: :yell: :D |

It's funny that you mention Jimi Jamison. I had never heard of him until yesterday when I was watching a DVD from the Voices of Rock tour and he came out and sang "Eye of the Tiger". He was probably out earlier but I skipped ahead to the Glenn Hughes set.
It's weird when you see something for the first time and all of a sudden you're hearing about it in other places. |

| That's a great story. The first Van Halen tape I bought was 1984, in mid Feb, '84. I walked three blocks in a snowstorm to the local record shop, with $6.00 in dimes & quarters to buy it!! That's a memory that will always stick w/me. |
