Is there an MP3 player on the market that will also play FLAC files? I've made it this long without owning one but I'm starting to feel the need. But half my music is in MP3 and half is FLAC (well, almost half).

I searched for something like that for a long time but you know what ... I figured 99.999% of the time I use my MP3 player in circumstances that I don't need lossless audio. If I'm doing yard work or doing some work around the house, shovling the drive way, whatever. So I got an iPod and converted my FLAC files to M4A to play on the iPod. I try to stay away from MP3, M4As have better sound quality and smaller file size. M4A is basically the next generation MP3 anyway. Of course I always archive my FLAC files to DVDR for trading purposes.

I would stay away from using FLAC's in any MP3 player. You'll fill up the drive in no time... Go with M4A..

A couple of players that might work: Meizu M6 miniPlayer, Rio Karma (karma is older, larger). If you are willing to overwrite the manufacturers firmware, Rockbox can be used on several players to play flac.

But then I have to either archive my existing flac files...seems a pain. Besides, why would I fear filling up something I've never owned to begin with?

Well, either way you need to archive your FLAC files. That MP3 player isn't a permanent archiving solution - it's just a portable player. Buy external hard drives or archive to DVD to store it.

I have an old 10-gig iPod and it fills up very quickly with all of the concerts that I constantly download. You'll want to get as much music on there as you can and it fills up quick. You're better off maximizing your space and using some sort of compression for your portable devices.

A MP3/M4A file is about 1/10 the size of a FLAC file, so you can put 10x more stuff on the player.

I think for most people it's just an inconvenience to have/make 2 sets of files - one compressed and one uncompressed. I have a little over 5,500 tracks on my iPod - and only a small handful of those are live shows.

Someday, when I can get a 10 terabyte iPod, maybe my entire music collection will fit uncompressed. But till then, it's a pain to convert hundreds of tracks from FLAC to mp3 or mp4. Consequently, I don't listen to as much live music on my iPod as I might if I could just throw FLACs on there without converting.

Nobody said it was easy or fun... but it's worth the effort if you have a ton of music that you'd like to take with you. Convert them overnight if it's that much of a hassle and delete them from your HD once you copy them to your player.

I always recommend archiving the FLAC files and I don't see that as being a pain. When you have about 4GB of FLAC files ... you burn a DVDR. To me it is not a big deal. I always archive my FLAC files and always recommend that everyone archive them. As far as converting the FLAC files to M4A, dbPowerAmp does that in one click so I don't see the as a pain either. If you go through changing the Tag, that may become as pain but that's really the last thing and only a convenience thing.

people are really just lazy these days. Remember actually having to make a cassette (in real time) if you wanted music on the go? It wasn't that long ago. How long will it be before people start complaining about how hard it is to download the music. "Can't it just be in my head? I don't wanna make the effort"

What I want is a head unit for my car that has a USB port that'll play my FLACs off of a thumb drive.

I know there's a bunch that'll play MP3, but haven't seen one that'll do FLAC...yet.

I wouldn't run anything from a thumb drive - you're asking for trouble. They're not meant to be used like that. They're just for moving files from point A to B.

There are plenty of head units with an AUX input that will accept your iPod or whatever you're using.
