|
|
I use a Philips machine that uses DVD+R discs but I'm getting a Panasonic DMR-HS2 that uses DVD-R so I'm wondering which are the best quality (and cheapest) discs.
I'd like to pay less than I am already for my DVD+R discs, especially considering the disc errors I keep getting with my latest batch, but I don't want the quality to suffer for it.
Any suggestions? |

I have a Sony DRU500a (+/-)
I've had nothing but good luck with everything from Princo to Mitsui.
Most traders will accept Name Brand stuff:
Maxell, Verbatim, Imation, Fuji, Pioneer, Mitsui, TDK
Stay away from the Memorex - I've heard bad things, but I've never experienced it myself.
Some of the more prevalent traders will not take the Princos, Riteks, Optodiscs....
Personally, I keep four or five different brands onhand to cover all bases.
Me - I'm happy with Maxell, TDK, Fuji, Verbatim, but I may switch to Mitsui and TKD only, for other traders. If you have any specific questions, send me an email, and I'll help you out as much as I can. |

I recommend Taiyo Yuden's disc(japan made).
it may not be known well in America or other countries. but it's better than any other famous brands(Sony, Maxell, Fuji, TDK...). as far as I know, it's the best.
buy with confidence.
their CD-R is excellent too. |

I forgot to say this.
don't buy their white printable disc. that surface is a bit sticky. :(
the quality itself is OK though... |

Actually, a lot of the Fuji CDR's that are labeled "made in japan" are T-Y's. You can check for yourself with EAC. These are great discs that I've never had a problem with.
Not sure if the Fuji DVD's are the same story. The great thing about fuji's is that a lot of the chain stores (best buy, office max, etc.) routinely put them on sale |

I also have a Philips DVD+R recorder (DVDR 880 stand alone). These machines will play pretty much anything, but I have recently been sent some Verbatim DVD-Rs (authored on a Panasonic stand alone) which the Philips refuses to recognise (comes up no disc). I have also bought a box of Verbatim +Rs for my Philips and each one has come up disc error and has ended up in the bin!
I know for a fact that Verbatims are a good disc, its just Philips machines dont like them!
So you might want to avoid them perhaps?

Actually, while Ritek CD-Rs are looked down upon (generally speaking), their DVD-Rs are fairly well respected.
The real question isn't which is the best - it's which is the best for your money.
You can spend $5 on the top of the line blanks and you get an excellent product. You can also spend $1.50 on a lesser blank that is almost (say... 90-95%) as good as the $5 blank. You have to shop around though.
I think the DVD-R forum at www.dvdrhelp.com is an excellent resource for finding out about disks. Manufacturers will tell you what they want you to hear - the people at this forum tell you their hands on experiences with the various disks. Occasionally, you get an idiot who posts there that doesn't know what he's talking about. However, by and large, the info is solid.

Chris. I have a Philips DVDR 980 and it records to and plays Verbatim +R discs just fine.
I got 25 on a spindle for about £40 and I haven't had a problem yet.
But I bought a box of 10 TDK DVD+Rs for £30 and had half of them come up "disc error" and that was the third time I'd bought and never had any problems before that so maybe it was just a bad batch. |

Thats interesting Atomic Punk..... as I have now started using TDK +Rs since the problem with the Verbatims and they work fine!
I think Philips machines in general are very touchy, when they are working they are great, but they are full of little problems that should have been ironed out before they where put on the market. Shame really as the picture quality is excellent.

Hmmm...so you think it might be the machine having a bad day rather than bad discs?
Never even thought of that |
