Hi,
Reb Beach (former lead guitarist for Winger and Dokken and current Whitesnake guitarist) is playing some dates in Pittsburgh with his local band. He'll be doing some songs from Winger, Dokken and Whitesnake as well.
Check out

I have a cheap pocket cassette recorder I used in college courses. Can I use this to record a show. I got Reb's personal approval from the thread above. I just want to know if I can get recording with this. I know it may not sound to good but its all I got.
Can anyone give me any tips with the device I have? Someone told me placing a piece of scotch tape on the mic would reduce some noise. Anyone ever heard about this? |

I am thinking about purchasing a minidisc player.
Is there any one I should look at? What qualities should I look for?
I am looking to spend around $100. I'm a bootleger on a budget. |

| Does your recorder have a mic input jack? You could do a little trick that I learned and that's but using a pair of headphones plugged into the mic jack and have the headphones around your neck while recording the show.I just did that this past sunday taping David Lee Roth because I couldn't get my digital mic and dat from my friend due to the snow storm we had in NJ. |

Try to use a minidisc recorder with a mic input and a line-input.
Try to use the line-input and let it plug into the soundboard.
Be aware that a minidisc doesn't get shocks during recording, or you will get "shocks" in your recording (= missing parts because of repositioning the recording head).
If you want to do a mic recording (audience recording) then the quality of the mic is more important than the minidisc.
Maybe someone else can put some tips on where to stand (front, back, near speaker cabinets, or not near speaker cabinets......)....... |

1. Buy an MD player/recorder.
2. Buy a good clip-on mic, black in color.
3. Wear black clothing to camouflage the mic and its wire.
4. Take backup batteries and blank MD's with you.
5. Don't get caught. |

Also, is it good to stand near the speakers or away from them. What proximity is best to capture the sound? |

From what I've always heard - you want to stand near the soundboard (probably right in front of it). The sound man is working to get the best sound he can and obviously, he goes by what he's hearing there at the soundboard.
I just bought some Core Sound Low Cost Binaural microphones (http://www.core-sound.com). By all accounts, they are really great for recording shows, and the price is good ($75).
As a previous poster said, the quality of the mics will make a bigger difference than the quality of the recorder.

| I use a Sony MD & a Sony stereo mic (black like Vince said) Try & get a mic with a cord, some mics are direct plug with no cord which can sometimes pick up noise from the MD itself while recording. Also keep an eye on your recording levels. Too high will pick up everything around you & result in the croud noise overpowering the music. I record around the half way mark on my MD (mine is a manual adjust, others are like a high or low) |

Thanks guys.
Could someone post a link (to Best Buy, Circuit City, etc) of a device and microphone they could recommend?
I'm recording a couple of shows from Reb Beach (of Winger). He plays in my local area and I got his permission to record them. :sssh: |
