Hello ...

I recently purchased a Marshall AVT 150H. With the gain maxed out - it has fantastic tone. I love this amp! My only problem is the "noise" between songs. I used to play through a GFX Twin Tube preamp with a built in gate - this thing was so quiet. I don't think a noise gate will help me - when I turn down the volume all the way on my guitar - it still buzzes like a chainsaw. I have high quality Monster cables - I don't think this is the issue. Is this just artifacts that metal guitarists live with when using lot's of gain? Please advise. :sus:

Thanks,

Your peadal most likely has a preamp in it that is boosting the signal. Then your going into the AVT and it's boosting the signal again which causes the feedback and humming. (Two amps in a row basically). Go through the effects return on the back of the AVT and you'll bypass the preamp on your amp. Hopefully you have two outputs so that you can go into the amp in stereo. You can also try turning down the gain on the effects pedal that you are using and use it for effects only. I prefer the amp on the Marshall anyday. Very nice amp. Later Alan

Alan:

I don't use Twin Tube anymore. Here is my setup - Ibanez RG into Monster Cable into Marshall. That's it. Great tone when I'm playing - but I would like to eliminate the buzz between songs. My only option now is to switch to the clean channel - no buzz - but bit of a hassle. Thanks for your thoughts.

Jeff

I use Alesis 3630 Dual channel Comp/gate. I think these are a god-send. Not only killer compression, but probably the best noise gate around. Send it through your loop and chain! This thing can tame even the nastiest amp(5150 and mod. marshall in my case). Plus you can find them cheap, $50-$100. Check e-bay. Get one, trust me!!!

Marfish:

Do you chain the Alesis in the Effects In/Out Loop of your 5150, or do you go from your guitar to the Alesis (to other effects) straight into your 5150?

Thanks!

Come to think of it. The buzzing could be a number of things. Interference being the first thing that come to mind. Check your cables, outlet etc.. Try turning everything in the house off and change outlets. It's things like those that you need to check. I had an unknown buzz some years ago that drove me nuts for days trying to fix. Come to find out it was the fluorecent light upstairs the whole time.
Back to the 3630.If your not running any pedals or anything, just go directly through it. If you have a chain of effects, there's all kinds of ways to experiment. I promise you'll fall in love with your sound from this thing. If you get one, get back to me and i'll give you some tips!! Good luck and rock on.

There are a few things that could be contributing to the noise. Try it in a different room (away from other electronic equipment, or flourescent lighting.) If that doesn't do it then try a Boss NS-2 noise gate. I use that on my 5150 and it kills everything. I go from a pin drop quiet to a very loud roar.
(just make sure you run it thru the effects loop) Do it the cheap way by bringing the amp to the music store and try it before you buy it. Good Luck.
