More Van Halen rumors this week, with the tempo definitely increasing. I've had a little fresh info from my source, which mirrors two other bits of info that have been mentioned elsewhere in the past week.
A newspaper in Canada has revealed information gathered at a recent Rock & Hyde reunion show (producer/musician Bob Rock and partner Paul Hyde). According to British Columbia paper The Providence, Bob Rock has been tapped as the producer of 3 new tracks for a Sammy Hagar fronted Van Halen.
The 3 tracks would appear on a new Greatest Hits release.
That's where my info comes in...I have been told that Van Halen Best Of Volume 2 will be the most likely next VH release - made more likely in light of the Canadian report (viewable at www.rebeccabooth.com/VH_article.jpg Scan by Mike Booth - thanks Mike for the scan and link.).
Apparently the Best Of Volume 2 is being put together as a first step towards making sure the band can work together still, without any issues from the past interfering.
I am also told that this release would enable the band to do some live dates in 2004 without doing a full blown tour. If the reunion works, then a new studio album and full tour will follow.
And lastly, I hear that an announcement is imminent. Maybe straight after the new year - everything was apparently to be decided and put in place by the end of this year - fats approaching.
That's what I have folks....take it as a rumor for now, but official news can't be too far away.

Thanks very much for the update!!!!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed this
"reunion" (I hate using the word reunion)
takes place and lasts. I just want these
guys back together making music.
Werent disagreements over there being a
first greatest hits album one of the
reasons Sammy and the band parted ways
in the first place?

 Yes, but maybe that's the point. If they can do this and work it out and not fight over it knowing that this is what kiboshed them before and it works out then that's probably the biggest hurdle for them working together and they can go on.
I'm very excited. As far as I'm concerned it's as official as it can get without one of them saying so (or someone associated). I'm starting to bet money that it'll happen this time! |

Here's another bit o' info from my buddy back east:
"I told you Scotty's been back in contact with them right? He's out with Hillary Duff right now, but it looks like he'll be involved somehow.
The only holdup right now is still the brothers. nothing is a done deal yet."
Harkening back to '96...."Baby steps. Baby steps." |

Doing a testing of the waters, so to speak, with a BOV2 sounds pretty damn logical to me, and somehow makes it even more credible in my mind. Perhaps that light at the end of the tunnel is starting to shine a bit brighter. â€â€Shine on, shine on...
I am slightly concerned with the line:
"...by the end of this year - fats approaching."
Should the arrival of fats be something to fear? Will they eat all the food? Will they sit on all the chairs and break them? Will they cause people to have to wait for the next elevator due to weight capacities and flatulence?
This should not be taken lightly. |

"Werent disagreements over there being a first greatest hits album one of the reasons Sammy and the band parted ways in the first place?"
I don't think so. At least I don't recall that being a main issue. I do recall Sammy saying he didn't like the idea of a greatest hits package but I don't think that was a deal breaker for him. The thing I seem to recall was Sammy saying he was blind-sided by a call from Eddie saying he wasn't a team player and that Eddie and David were working together again. I don't think the greatest hits package was something they got all bent out of shape over. Yeah, Sammy wasn't head over heals about it but I also don't think it caused a riff. Then again I may have missed something. |

This should not be taken lightly. Too funny Baluchitherium!!!!!!!
I remembered something else. I think it was
that Sammy was arguing with the brothers over
doing a greatest hits album all together.
He said something to the effect of he didnt
want to be considered a "greatest hits" type
of band. He wanted to be in a band that was
know for continuing to pump out good, new
music album after album. In alot of ways I
agree with him. Anyways I'm sure there were
many, many other reasons form their split
and they all just finally came to a head
in '96..............
Let's just all keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best :)

I recall 3 things that broke the camel's back:
1. manager Ray Daniels hired by the brothers; I think he had a long history with the VH brothers, but Sammy and Ray butted heads.
2. Doing the Twister soundtrack (Humans Being): Sammy's lack of committment and sub-par/burned-out lyrics (according to Ed)
3. the Best Of cd "ordeal": Ed wanted a Best Of vol. 1(Dave) and Best Of vol. 2(Sammy), but Sammy didn't want....
Time passess... I want My Van Halen!

True, Ray Danniels was hired after the death of Ed Leffler to manage the band. In terms of history, Alex was, at one time, married to Ray Danniels sister, and were brothers-in-law.
Apparently, rumour has it that Danniels denied to Sammy that there was any danger of a split, but was secretly encouraging Ed to get back to working with Roth.
I personally don't understand why Danniels wanted to get invloved with VH, 'cause he already had a cherry gig managing Rush. |

I remember Sammy saying something about R.D. wanting VH to sign over a percentage of the back catalog & something about him wanting VH to work with Roth again. Funny that Gay Cherone was managed by Mr Daniels as well... |
