| Hey Guitard, we've got to stop meeting like this. LOL! Are you going to Hershey, as well? I'll be there too. Going with the wife. It's her first time seeing the boys. Anyway, you know the drill, if you or anyone else will be hangin' out, let me know. Thanks again! :thumb: |

Anyway, I guess a concert review will have to do. My offer still stands, though. :thumb: |

Right now it's looking like Toronto and Grand Rapids, Michigan though.
I just started these up so that there's a specific thread for these shows and we won't get threads going that are titled some like "Great show last night!!" This way it's very clear which thread is for which show and you won't have to hunt and peck to find reviews for the shows you want to read about.
I got this idea from another forum and it works really well there.

I know this is off topic- but does anyone plan on recording the show..?
I'm on my way down tonight, but don't have any recording equipment.. :(
Let me know.. I've been waiting 9 years to see them.. Last time I was going to see them was in 1995 at Montage Mountain in Scranton, PA. I was a poor college student and couldn't afford it.. "Next year" I said. Next year never came..
Until Now..
9 long years later..... |

Reviews, from vhforums.com:
"Okay… I just got back from my 2 hour drive from Hershey and I have had plenty of time to think about what I was going to say. I just want to preference this post that I have been a fan since I was a small kid (I’m 31 now) and I went with an open mind. I read these posts and hear what people have to say. However, I am NOT going to discuss set-lists or the un-lists because of one major reason...
IT DOESNT MATTER!!!!!
They blew me away. It took me back to 86’ but much, much better. The following is my post of a great evening. As a VH fan, as a musician and with an open mind. I didn’t drink the kool-aide, this shit is for real…
OVERALL
You could just tell that these guys missed each other. That they are best friends again and they do know now what they should have known then. It was amazing to watch the chemistry and how happy they were… Eddie, who never talked before was at the mic all night saying “I am having a fucking blast, I hope you are to! or “This is a new beginning and it feels great!. You could tell that he was moved many times through-out the show. FYI: There has been some questions concerning the words before the solo on IAT: Ed says “ Hey Mike Hey Sam, I don’t know why but it’s about time.
The band sounded great. Very tight. Very loud!
EDDIE
Like I said, Ed was happy. Very happy. He was goofing w/ Sam all night and smiling and dancing and jumping. I was moved just watching it. He did use the 5150 guitar. It did have a new neck, however it was NOT a peavey, it was a no-name fender strat neck.
Everyone hit the roof when they saw it for UFB.
But here is the big point… Ed attacks the guitar now. I mean goes for the jugular. He has been reborn and is doing things with the guitar that I have not seen. He is just free. His new attack is allowing him to play the songs w/ new riffs and directions… Everything had a new feeling and emotion. It was NOT THE SAME OL’ SONGS! He ripped them. His solo was different too. I must say, the last few tours (I know, we’re talking ages ago) everyone was on auto pilot… Now let’s just say they are re-inventing the wheel.
ALEX
Let me just say this… Alex looks like he is 18 again… He looks great! He sounds great too. Again, he had a new attack on his playing and was amazing. Solo was different too. He looked thrilled to be there!
MIKE
Mike is just Mike. Great vocals and was just having the time of his life! The solo was a little sagging… But looked like his parents got back together. He sang “somebody get me a doctor and had a blast w/ Sam and Ed bothering him the whole time.
SAMMY
He has some pipes… Never sounded better! Lost weight and looks slim. He again was just into the moment and having a great time. He and Ed were hugging and goofing around all night! His acoustic solo was Eagles and Deeper kind of love… For seeing these many times before, they were great and full of emotion… The one funny line he said was “ I wrote this song right before I joined VH the 1st time. Everyone went nuts.
FINALLY
Everything was updated… The sound, the video (the updates to Right Now were very cool), the energy and the love!!! You won’t care what they played or didn’t. You won’t even think about it. At least I didn’t. I was just moved by the look on their faces and the way Eddie couldn’t stop saying how happy he was.
You just got the overwhelming felling that this is the REAL VH and it will be this way for a long time! Have a great time when you go… I hope you have as much fun as I did and will again!"
And....
"Just got back!
I've never seen the band have so much fun on stage. Just lots of goofing around.
Some highlights for me:
Sam acting like he was going to cut Ed's hair off during the solo to Panama.
Ed throwing what Sam thought was a wedding dress over his head during Samn's solo
During Panama...sam saying, "reach down between my legs and all of that other shit...." even Big Al thought that was funny.
The fucked up Greensboro graphic during Right Now! Sam had to wonder why the crowd was booing!
Unchained was great. Poundcake. Even UFB sounded great! The band sounded great on a select group of tunes.
Now for the low lights:
Ed's solo was pretty bad. Not really sure what he played. While a lot of stuff was new, it seemed more like him noodling around and then mixing in pieces of his trademark licks. Folks really wanted a new solo from Ed and you have it.....an adlibed performance of noodling mixed with pieces of his favorite pieces of music.
Ed needs to get rid of that fuckin' sustainer. He's such a great player and doesn't need to rely on a piece of gear so much. Seems like every tune, he's flipping a switch and playing the tune on one string with the sustainer carrying the notes. He uses the sustainer for the intro of LTS and it's appropriate, but during some of the other tunes, he just seemed to noodle with it and the outcome wasn't always good. I think LTS solo uses it a lot....Ed is able to grab one note...then solo over it...lots of shit going on.
The crowd sucked. Lots of people, but the least enthusiastic group I've ever seen at a VH show. Come on make some noise motherfuckers! I must say a lot of tailgating going on! My buddy brought a portable DVD player and 1982's Largo show......not a bad way to get ready for the show.
The sound was good, but not nearly loud enough. When I can hear the old man next to me singing WCTBL...you know the PA isn't turned up enough.
Sam's solo is too long.
Jump isn't the way a VH show should start...but at least it's out of the way.
Overall thoughts:
While the energy level for the band was way up, I got admit this was one of the worst shows I've been to. I blame it on the crowd, venue and the fact that I've been to way too many club shows lately....they spoil you.
I just found that Ed missed to many solos tonight and really worked himself into some holes he didn't dig himself out of....too much improvising.....sometimes soloing in the wrong key......but he was smiling, kicking and telling the crowd that it was a "gas" for him.
Glad to see the boys back.....I'm hoping for a better DC show on the 25.
And please no flames, this is my opinion of the show....I'm a Van Halen fan just telling you what I saw and heard."
And....
"Just got home from Hershey - Here are some thoughts.
** I had 11th row seats, but WAY off to the side. 4 star got much better seats here.
** It seemed that every 4* got a tshirt.
** Same setlist as Greensboro
** Everyone seemed to be having a GREAT time on stage
** Eddie seems to have gotten a little nuts as he aged. The samaurai hair and the rope noose around his neck. He is still my idol, but he seems a bit out there.
** Eddie sang alot - more than I have ever seen him sing
** Eddie's Updated Wolfgang is NOTHING like my Wolfgang. He has 2 switches under the volume knob, and some kind of sustainer switch/button on the side of the guitar. He also has a different neck pickup.
** Eddie is loosely interpreting the old songs. Sometimes I like what he did, and sometimes it was like "Huh?" But I give him credit for trying to updating the songs.
** No Wolfie
** They goofed and aired the video for Greensboro in Right Now.
All in all, I loved it because I really never thought that I would get to see VH with Sammy again. It was a bonus for me.
Next - 5* in Philly on Wed!!!" |

I totally agree with everything in the reviews.. Awesome concert.. Opening band was even good- they kinda reminded me of the Black Crowes...
Eddie was, of course, Eddie... Improvising on every song. As someone stated, he improvised a little too much in my opinion and screwed up alot of the songs.
His solo was too long also- he did Cathedral, Spanish Fly, and Eruption... He had alot of screwing around that anybody could do in between- slapping his guitar and just basically trying to show off. I was telling my girlfriend that Eddie is "the shit".. After his solo- she didn't agree.
Anyway, I'm hoping someone got this on Audio or Video.. It would be awesome to get a hold of this. If there's going to be a weed or something- count me in. I can burn sone DVDs if anybody got video.
Also- if anybody needs... I have scans of the tickets before I went to the concert if anybody needs them for artwork.

Anyone else at the show notice the extended version of Ain't Talkin Bout Love? At the end of the song where they are supposed to be singing HEY HEY HEY HEY, Sammy kept going with "Aint Talkin Bout Love". Seemed that Eddie was looking around wondering how the song was going to end. Ed finally jumped in there and started singing the HEY HEY HEY HEY parts to end the song.
Great show, can't wait for Philly on Wed. night. |
