Hey I wanna know something what is Van Halens beef with the Clash or atleast Lee Roths?
I just saw '83 US Festival and it seemed like there was some feud, I know I am 20 years too late but hey sue me.

| I don't know of any specific "beef" BUT in 1983 during the US Festival I do recall some flack coming out of the fact that the Clash emptied whiskey bottles and then filled them with Ice Tea to have on stage. It would appear they were drinking alcohol when in fact they were drinking Ice Tea. David Lee Roth may have just made the comments he did so people didn't think Van Halen was doing the same thing. |

The US Fest was originally conceived and largely funded by Steve Wozniak, one of Apple Computers founders. As such, the US Fest could afford to attract and pay for the biggest bands at the time. Van Halen was paid the unheard of amount of $1 million to play.
Upon hearing this, the members of the Clash decided that they were just as worthy and said that they should be paid just as much as VH or they would pull out. While my memory of this time isn't great, I do remember the Clash getting a lot of bad PR out of this. They were a popular band at the time but nowhere the draw that VH or many other US Fest bands were.
It wasn't just DLR bagging on them. I remember a lot of shots being taken by MTV and local radio DJ's as well. Ultimately, I think that they did decide to play. |

| Dave said the same thing about quiot riot and cheap trick. There's actually a boot out there called this ain't cheap trick, referring to the line. |

| Yeah, he says "this aint Quiet Riot" on the Panama boot '84 at MSG. His raps to the audience are the best part of the boot because the recording is very bad quality. |

I kindda find it annoying that DLR says the EXACT same thing over and over and over and over and over and over ...
The first time I heard the US Festival recording and heard him say, "Look at all the people here tonight" I thought it was pretty cool but then after I started collecting recording and heard him same the EXACT same thing about a dozen times it lost its charm. I realize that back in the early 80s there probably weren't as many people gogin to multiple shows but but the 90s I knew many people going to several shows and tour after tour saying the same thing gets old. I think he even said it in 99 when I saw him at Alpine Valley when there were only a couple thousand people there and he was opening for Bad Company. Com'on Dave time to get a new line. |

Another note on the Quiet Riot deal:
about 3 or 4 years ago, a local radio station always has a summer concert with 4 or 5 bands from the 80's-early 90's. Anyway DLR was the headliner, and Quiet Riot was scheduled to be one of the earlier acts in the day. The story I heard was that once QR heard Dave was involved with it, they withdrew. |
