In my review of San Diego's show, I said that was a sign of what was to come for L.A.
Well, sorry, but I have to say that the show in San Diego and the one tonight in L.A. are tied. This was another kick-ass night for the band. They were "full blast and top down" tonight, just as good as the San Diego gig.
Ed was ON, people. He didn't miss a single stroke, beat, note, etc. Sorry, but if he played like shit in your town this tour, we got the best of it tonight in L.A.
Abso-fucking-lutely!
The crowd at Staples welcomed them home in a big way, and the band showed their appreciation by playing their hearts out. Ed gave us 2 teasers tonight. Right before beginning "Humans Being", he started up the full intro to "Women In Love". So much so that everyone thought they were actually going to play that song. Then, later on, before he began his solo spot, the entire band started up the intro to "Hot For Teacher".
Talk about a crowd going ballistic! I thought the Staples Center was going to cave in from the response! But, it wasn't to be. A friend of mine who was front row said the look of panic on Sam's face was priceless. He said it was a total "WTF?!?!? We didn't rehearse this!!!" look.
Wolfie came out and played "316" with Ed. I had a feeling that was going to happen tonight, seeing as how this was the opening night gig in L.A., and, at the end of "Eruption", Al didn't comeback out on drums to help finish it out properly. Ed walked to the edge of the stage, sat down, started strumming out the first few chords, and out walked Wolfgang. The audience ate it up. After it was all over, Ed told everyone, "In a year, I'll be HIS fucking roadie!"
Sam's voice was in much better shape tonight than a few nights ago in San Diego. The roughness he had on Tuesday was gone. Much smoother. Ed improvised, again, but not too much. Tonight he went out there and showed everyone why he's still Eddie Van Fucking Halen. He was the same Ed I saw in '98 on the "III" tour; full of non-stop energy, having a ball, and playing as though his life depended on it. He and Al both had ear-to-ear smiles all night long.I don't think I saw them ever stop smiling.
Mike was much better tonight than Tuesday. He was also the last one to leave the stage, he just hung out by his speaker stacks with his arms raised up in a victory sign. Al was the master again tonight. He showed no sign of the herniated disc which required him to wear that damn neck brace for 2 tours in a row. Again, the interplay between Ed and Sam just had to be seen to be believed. If there was ever any animosity between them, you'd never know by the way they kept hugging on each other. Same with Mike and Ed. Miike even gave Ed an extra long hug, as if to say "I've missed this, and I've missed you". And, before anyone says anything, it was Ed who inititated the gesture, not Mike.
It was the standard setlist we've all come to know so far, with the only surprises being the "WIL" & "HFT" intros. What I saw tonight has led me to believe there IS hope for a new album, eventually, and that any chance DLR ever thought he had to again tour with these guys has now dissipated completely. To anyone attending tomorrow night's show in L.A., strap yourself in, man, because I have a feeling VH is going to be a race car in the red.
Good night. [/b] |

Another great review full of awesome news! "Hot For Teacher" and "Women In Love" teasers, WOW!!!!!!!
Your reviews have me dreaming of making a cross country trek to see 'em again. It's a no brainer, but I hope someone was filming these shows. |
