This is a personal opinion question, and since the guitar mags have been pathetic
in the last 15 years I am asking for the old school guitar players to put some input
to this thread.

Only rule is the cutoff year of 1991. Everything else is game

my list would be as follows:

best riffer: BEST RIFF

1 EDDIE unchained
2 GEORGE LYNCH wicked sensation
3 RANDY RHOADS over the mountain
4 YNGWIE MALMSTEEN i'll see the light tonight
5 K.K. DOWNING & GLENN TIPTON another thing comin
6 JOHN SYKES cryin' in the rain
7 WARREN DEMARTINI wanted man
8 JAKE E LEE never
9 AKIRA TAHASAKI soldier of fortune
10 VIVIAN CAMPBELL stand up and shout

Had to really think about this one, there are so many killer rock riffs that ruled the
world at one time. Sure do miss those days.

Thank god for cd reissues!!!

anyone else???

In no particular order are a few of my old school guitar riff faves....I've stuck to one per artist, but I could fill the top 10 with EVH riffs!!

I’m The One – EVH (Van Halen) 1978
Cult of Personality – Vernon Reid (Living Colour) 1988
Breaking The Law – Glen Tipton and KK Downing (Judas Priest) 1980
Black Sabbath – Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) 1970
Rock Bottom – Michael Schenker (UFO) 1974
He’s a Woman She’s a Man – Uli Roth & Rudolf Schenker (The Scorpions) 1977
Back in Black – Angus and Malcom Young (AC/DC) 1980
Check – Kim Mitchell – (Max Webster) 1980
Stone Cold Crazy – Brian May (Queen) 1974
Hell Raiser – Andy Scott (Sweet) 1973 *
Snortin Whisky – Pat Travers & Pat Thrall (Pat Travers Band) 1980

* this was blatantly ripped off by Motley Crue on 'Kick Start My Heart'.

Dunno about the 1991 cut off though???? the last 15 years has produced some top players, you just need to appreciate their different approaches to music....these are some of my faves...

Matt Belamy - Muse
Tom Morello - Rage Against The Machine
Ty Tabor - Kings X
Reeves Gabrelles - David Bowie & Tin Machine
Jerry Cantrell - Alice in Chains
John Frusciante - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Dave Navaro - Janes Addiction & RHCP
Johnny Greenwood - Radiohead
Kendal Jones - Fishbone
Sean Gennocky - Moke

.... and dont forget the new 'old school' duo Dan and Justin Hawkins from The Darkness.

Chris.

4) rock and roll band-boston
5) living loving maid -zep(heart breaker as well you can't have one with out the other)
6) do you want to play -extreme
7) YYZ -rush
8)sleaze factor-steve morse
9)fire -hendrix
10)funky music -wyld cherry

I would have most likely just listed van halen ,but I thought that would have been boring so
not in order ,but some of my favorites

Tony Iommi - NIB
Tony Iommi - Iron Man
Tony Iommi - Supernaut
Tony Iommi - Under The Sun
Tony Iommi - Cornucopia
Tony Iommi - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Tony Iommi - Symptom of The Universe
Tony Iommi - Heaven and Hell
Tony Iommi - Falling Off The Edge of the World
Tony Iommi - Zero The Hero

For me, Tony Iommi is the master of all riffs, no questions asked... I don't think of Ed as a riff player. Great rhythm player (IMO, very underrated in that aspect), but when I think riff, I think heavy, and heaviness is something that's never been of much concern for EVH...

I only wish the cutoff year hadn't been 1991 - could've thrown in some riffs from Dehumanizer, Cross Purposes, Forbidden, and the two solo albums in there. :p :D

Guitar freak is not alone my man!

I would list Sabbath by the album! I will admit though it took many many years for me to start listening to non-Ozzy Sabbath.

Sabbath!

Iommi wrote every great metal riff, you can divide all the great blues based hard rock riffs up among Malcolm Young and Keef Richards and the rest are Blackmore's :)
