I was wondering whatever happened to the idea of a Newbie Forum?
I know there was a start for a CD-tree for newbs, but I didn't see what happened to it.

What I'd like to do is start a DVD tree for newbies (or anyone that wants to join).
I'd be willing to run the tree if I could get some help. Maybe a DVD from each era to get new traders started.

Any interest ? ?

I tried to help and no one took advantage of the offer except for one person.

I'm not sure what those that are new to trading are looking for? I've seen several people say they received freebies and B&P's. It's a good start but if you are serious about getting into this hobby/obsession take every offer presented to you.

Now here is a kind soul looking to help all of you out. Take advantage of this kind offer!

If you need a donation for the tree take a look at my list and PM me. I'm willing to give this one more go to help the new traders out.

I'd be willing to involve myself in any way possible, and obviously as a newbie myself it would be great for me... but as I understand it I still have a way to to go (both in time and posts) before I can participate in any Trees.

I think a newbie forum would be good, probably the established traders here would be happy to put a few freebies/B&Ps into the system and then people can start building up their collection trading with other newbies.

I'm not so sure there has to be some mega tree attached to this idea though - the last one seemed to be heading for 20+ discs which is probably too daunting, especially for people just starting out.

How about this as the forum title:

Adopt a Newbie Coalition - aka AANC
Start your collection here. Post request or look for offers from veteran traders

I agree the size of my tree might have scared some away but no matter what they would have all been covered had bubba not followed through. I would never leave anyone out to dry like that. All of us have had that first big trade where you are on pins and needles until your new shows arrive. I think it is a right of passage in the trading community. What worries me is that I keep seeing people thank others for freebies, which I have no problem with, heck I do them myself, but I have yet to see someone really dive in there and offer back what was given to them. Isn't that what it is all about, sharing the music with other fans?

I agree maybe a tree is not the best course of action. Maybe we literally need to adopt some of these new traders, take them under our wing and then let them loose to (hopefully) go on and be active traders in this and other communities.

Geeze I think the teacher in me just crept out! Sorry about that but I am just trying to help find a way to get new traders started while waiting to get their eligibility requirements met.

PS- Tap...did the Floyd fan say if they got the goodie package I sent?

Don't know, haven't talked to them in a while - I will find out. Thanks again

As for the newbie forum, I don't think it really needs to be very "hands on" from experienced traders. A similar forum was set up at one of the Stones boards and it worked very well - turned out there were a bunch of people lurking/watching who wanted to get into trading but were intimidated by the impression that the regular posters already had everything. Once they had a place to post lists and meet each other, some collections grew really quickly in a short time. And I think a lot of newbies might prefer 1-1 trading over the responsibility of trees, at least to get started.

I agree with what both of you are saying... I wanted to get started in trading, but like Tap said, I was intimidated to try and initiate trades because I figured noboby would want to take the time to help me and that I would never be able to get any shows that established traders didn't already have. Of course I was wrong, as you and many others have proven, many in this community are more than welcome to help people get going. I just threw up a post asking if anybody would want to help me get started with some 2:1 trades, Marfish responded, and within a few days we had a trade set up.

I guess the long and short of what I'm saying is that your idea for a newbie forum, or something along those lines, could do nothing but help because I can see how a newbie (of which I still am one) would be overwhelmed when trying to get started.

I just got a DVD burner and successfully burned a couple discs. Easier than I thought it was gonna be. I was looking to give back and dive in and run a small tree myself.
Heck, I'm still a newbie, but I'm willing to give it a shot. That's the only way to learn.
And besides, giving someone a show from here is better than that person going to ebay.

I'm pretty much a newbie, although I have been doing 2:1's and B&P's for about a year.
I am more than happy to serve as a branch on a newbie tree, as long as the number of discs involved is not too large.

I'll keep checking to see when and if a sign up occurs.

OK...Lets all convess...I am a newbie...and I have already posted on these boards the same feelings that each of you have expressed. I did not have dvd burner and did not know how to do this stuff. Teaching an old dog new tricks is one thing...but me???..so I kept coming to the forums here and looking...window shopping...untill I decided that I could not take it any more...of course...once in...you find that you did not need a dvd burner...that everybody...and I mean everybody! is so nice here...I should have had my collection built up long ago...but I am not after a "collection" (except for van halen..cause I can't get enough)...I am enjoying soem of the music that I once listened to (oldies-70's) ..and getting to experience music that I have not had the privilage to enjoy...example--Megadeath Roadie Tapes-6 Rockin DVD's...are you kiddin me? This stuff is not at Wal Mart...I have tried to respond to each newbie post that I have seen..the times that I have not are times when others on the board have beat me to it..and too much input can over whelm a newbie also I think. That said...I will be "Up For Breakfast" and ready to help out on any newbie projects...I have a long way to go and I am going to enjoy the trip--check out the scenery...look..
Right Now..Its Every Thing..

I'm with Kent...the more the merrier. Just have to make sure we are not serving up more EBay fodder. One other issue...actually something I had trouble with when I started is sifting thru the MP3'd boots out there. Be careful to trade the real deal...

That said, I'd be happy to send the seed for "Feelin the Balance" (from my silver) to a newb that would like to tree it. No trade necessary :thumb: It's all about sharing right?!? PM, email...LMK...rd

I'm not sure what the logistics would be, maybe one newbie could step up and be the seed. I'm fairly new myself and it was absolutely intimidating at the outset when it seemed everyone out there had such a big list and all I had to offer was blanks in return.
But as someone said, people on this board are extremely kind and generous and I was able to get off the ground with a few B & P's, got a burner myself, then it was off to the races.
Maybe one newbie could be the seed, and from there the not-so-newbies could donate a disc or two to that person, sending a couple of shows to the seed. From there it could be a newbie tree. I'd certainly be willing to donate to the cause.

Just a thought, perhaps a way to in a small way pay back the kindness to this board. :D

I think a Newbies Only forum might be a good idea. But I have mixed thoughts on the subject...I would like the entire VH Trade Forums to be as newbie-friendly and non-intimidating as possible, and "separating" the newbies from the more experienced traders by having their own forums might give the impression that there's "cliques". I don't want distinct trading groups to emerge...I would rather everyone just be different "shades of gray", so to speak. Do you all think I'm being wrong in this assessment?

I'm moving this to the feedback forum, but feel free to continue to discuss this.

I understand being a newbie trying to get started with the forum group. I think that is a great Idea. I will do what ever I can to get started. My past is being a taper since 1988 and have taped well over 700 shows . I am trying to get things transfer with help from a friend. Does everyone prefer doing trees? Let me kow so I can add my goods to the group.

Thanks
Mark

I think the new tree rules are a whole lot more intimidating than a newbie forum would be. And I think any site like this is (unintentionally) intimidating because the posters are mainly established traders.

I think there's more than enough generous posters here who could feed stuff into a newbie forum, and I think letting newbies have their own place would encourage rather than discourage them from getting involved. Plus it would have the added bonus of boosting post count and trader ratings.

Also I think a mega tree is not a good idea. It's a lot of work for anyone involved and not much use for a newbie who joins a month later. Maybe letting people experience the joy of getting that brown padded envelope with a show or two to enjoy rather than obtain every available VH show all in one go.
