Dont laugh but......
Enuff z Nuff opened up with The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour when they played in Nottingham 1991 ish......... killer hard rockin version, totally unexpected, but got the evening off to a great start!
Amazing band, great songs, very underatted IMO.... shame they just got lumped in with all the talentless hair-metal wonders of the time.

Great topic Frank!
For me, it's VH:
Light up the Sky from '79 & Unchained from '84. Both high energy, kick ass openers! |

I like the opinion polls!
Some of my favorite opening songs from shows I've seen would be:
Dio "Stand up and Shout"
Robert Plant "In The Mood"
VH "Unchained"
Some favorites from vinyl...ummm errr....CD:
Rainbow "Spotlight Kid" and/or "Kill the King"
UFO "Natural Thing" |

Juli,
You are right on with this one. Not only that, but it was acoustic too. That is just the best.
Also on my list is Judas Priest opening with The Hellion/Electic Eye and Grateful Dead opening with Feels Lke a Stranger. There's a line in the tune where they sing "You know it's gonna get stranger, let's get on with the show" Perfect.

That reminds me ... in 1988 Def Leppard opened with Stagefright. Great opener.
I bet that was probably the only time the Dead has reminded someone of Def Leppard :D
Wow, great responses everyone. |

For us old guys in the PRE-internet days guessing the opening song was the best. Your favorite band was about to hit the stage, everyone threw out their best guess for opening song.
For VH you can't beat Unchained. Romeo Delight is damn good also.
Def Leppard opening with Rock Rock till you drop was pretty good. |

good topic! gotta think ... too many memories colliding...
Soundgarden, 1998 Showbox, Seattle (pre-tour rehearsal) -- Waiting For The Sun (Doors)
Guns'n'Roses, holidaze 1987, Nite 5 of 5 nite-stand, Perkins Palace, Pasadena -- Its So Easy (Slash drunkenly running/stumbling ... totally BIFFING it and rolling around on the stage, cigarette clenched in teeth, not missing a note! amazing)
Cheap Trick, summer July 13, 1979 Pontiac MI (opening for KISS) -- Hello There (bookended the show w/ Goodnite Now, natch)
VH, Fourth o' July 1981, Detroit -- all that joyous, noisy chaos + crazy buildup that they start every show with, into .... On Fiii-yaaaahhhhh!!!
Pearl Jam, Slim's San Fran 5/93, "secret show" -- (Don't) GO (they really were AMAZING at this show, furious, young ...and, McCready played a sloppy snippet of Eruption, too. Show was a benefit for Surfrider Foundation)
The Police, Bookie's, Detroit MI Nov. 1979 -- Next To You (totally frantically PERFECT. great little club; they tore the roof OFFF)
ahhhh ... there's many more. but, these stand-out right now. i was at all of these shows, so ... it's genuine, first-person nostalgia. man. now you got me goin' ...

Springsteen "Badlands" in 1978.
Queen "We Will Rock You" the fast version was always a great way to start the show.
Ozzy "Over The Mountain" in 1982 after coming down the castle stairs.
Elton "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" on any tour.
Iron Maiden "Where Eagles Dare" on the Piece of Mind Tour in 1983.
VH-"Unchained" was the best in 1984. |

Great Poll.
I'd go with:
Van Halen - "Romeo Delight" (South American Assault - 1983)
JP - "The Helion/Electric Eye"
AC/DC - "For Those About to Rock (We salute You)" - Rock in Rio 1985
Foo Fighters - "All My Life" |

U2 opening with "Stand by me" in 87 with all of the house lights on while it played over the house system from Ben E King. Great opening!
Also Metallica opening with Breadfan at Woodstock 94 |

| I've always thought when Blackmore's Rainbow would come out to perform "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", after the "Wizard of Oz" tape played over the speakers, was always cool. |
