Dave Era: I love all songs, even the ones never released before.
Sammy Era: I can't stand "Best of Worst Worlds" and "Blargh! and Blue". Terrible tunes, IMHO.
Gary Era: I like all the songs, including "TWILY". |

If you got an open mind and wish to listen to a great album well recorded with good tunes and nice guitar solos, then you may find it all at "Van Halen 3". Everybody says a lot of stuffs about the production of that record, but "OU812" was their weakest point onto production level, IMHO. |

| Simonhead, I agree with you about OU812, sounds like it was mixed in mud at times, especially the guitar tunes. I've heard that's why Ed didn't work with Don Landee after that album, as Don was the producer (actually he is given a "Recorded by" credit). That was part of the problem. The other part is that the guitar tunes just weren't that good, with the exception of Black & Blue. I also agree that productionwise, 3 sounds just fine to me. But I disagree in calling it great. I think it's spotty, some songs work, some songs don't. All this is IMHO of course. |

Thanks for your response, SuebnDave. Yeah, "OU 812" was produced by the band and Don, but specially by Eddie. Don Landee recorded them and he always took control over the console - that's one of the reason Eddie stopped working with him. Besides, the bass sound is awful; it is said it was recorded straight thru the board!

| Mike's bass has always been buried in the mix, though he did sound great on For U.C.K. I think that was some of his best and most consistent work. I've read he didn't even play on III or the new tracks on Best of Both Worlds! Is that true? |

That's true: the 3 new songs released with "BOBW" got the bass guitar recorded by Eddie Van Halen - Mike isn't even mentioned as co-author of those tracks.
For what I know about "Van Halen 3", Mike Anthony did a superb job on that record - just listen to "Without You", "One I Want" or "From Afar". Just a thought, but maybe Eddie helped him to create his bass lines.
I remember that I read on Guitar World that when they were recording "Fair Warning", they used little bass amplifiers to get a better sound. Later, they got Andy Johns producing "F.U.C.K." not only to get a different approach, but to get drums and bass sounding better (remember that Eddie reformed his studio in 1990). Andy Johns worked with Led Zeppelin and John Paul Jones is one of the main influences for Michael Anthony's playing. Andy Johns also helped Eddie learning how to record well... :thumb: |
