Not sure if this has been asked before, but who is the best drummer
past or present ? I think Alex is God.

| Alex ain't the god my friend. That would be Neil Peart. Nobody even comes close. |

I agree with Ken, Neil is my favorite. Alex is way up there,
as well as John Bonham. The guy from AC/DC (can't think
of his name at the moment) also lays down a solid bottom
end. What I like about him is he doesn't do anything fancy,
just keeps the beat - the name of the game! |

Alex is very good and works well in the context of VH, but there are other drummers I prefer.....
Will Calhoun - Living Colour
Chad Smith - Red Hot Chili Peppers
John Bonham
Keith Moon
...and as already mentioned Neil Peart.

My fave drummer of all time... Ian Paice, the greatest time keeper IMO
I've always loved to hear a drummer get the most out of a small kit, although I do like Peart :D |

Phil Rudd....
He only really needs a bass drum, a snare, some hi-hats and a few cymbals. ;) |

I agree with many of the drummers named. Great point about Phil Rudd, nothing fancy but a great sound. I'm going to throw one more name in the ring.
Matt Sorum - He drummed on the Cult's "Sonic Temple" album. I saw them on that tour and he was thunderous. We all know what he has done with GnR and Velvet Revolver, but his early drumming is Magic. Not saying he is the best of all time or anything, but he can hang with most. |

While I agree that Neil Peart is probably #1, some younger guys tear it up, including:
Danny Carey - Tool
Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater
Kenneth Schalk - Candiria (although he just quit the band)
Similar to Peart, none of these guys work in the traditional time signatures. Similar to Rush, all of these bands have at times been lumped into the "prog rock" category. |

Charlie Benante (Anthrax)

Chad Smith (Chili Peppers) |

| I also like Tommy Aldridge. I heard a Mike Portnoy solo and I could've sworn it was Alex Van Halen. |
