| Did eddie play better with or without Dave(not the band as a whole-just Eddie's style)? |

| The first 6 albums are legendary......so, gotta go with Dave. I guess Ed played better (or more aggressive) when he was pissed off! :D |

I agree. The frictions between Dave and Eddie made =VH= produce the best music ever released. :thumb: |

| I always thought that live he played better with Sammy. The 95 tour he was brilliant. |

He was trying to stay sober during the Balance Tour, which was something difficult for him. Years of heavy drinking couldn't be cut so fast and I really don't believe he was sober all the time. Sammy also wrote in his non-released book that Eddie wasn't sober as he claimed to be. :( |

I think you can look at it 2 ways. Its a tough one.
Ed was definately more raw with Dave. He ripped the guitar apart back then with songs, noises and stuff people had never heard. Absolutely legendary.
However with Sam he branched out and got a little funky with the Steinberger and more abusive with the wammy bar and tried some new things. I personally like the Sammy era better but I would have to go with the Dave era for the best raw sound.
I also agree with the comment about the Balance era. SUPER razor sharp sound. I loved that tour.

| I don't know, tough choice...the licks on When It's Love and Love Walks In sound the same to my ears as what he did on Romeo Delight and Unchained. |

I always had the feeling that Ed became more interested in song writing after 1984. He stopped experimenting with the guitar they way he used to though I also agree that his live playing improved.
I prefer the Dave years for his playing. |

Give me When It's Love or Love Walks In anyday over Big Bad Bill, Secrets or Could This Be Magic. And I really dislike When It's Love and Love Walks In. Now, Romeo Delight and Unchained are among my favorite songs but so is Pleasure Dome, Aftershock and 5150.
I agree Eddie's style changed between pre and post 1984. I think in the late 80's and early 90's he became more and more concerned over song structure and not just playing. A lot of his best playing was pre-84 but post-84 it became much more organized (for lack of a better term).
I too thought his playing on the 95 tour was excellent (but the 93 tour was my personal favorite). |

Thats a very good way of looking at it. For me I like the disorganised Eddie much better. He never really managed to re-capture that pure adrenalin rush of his playing on those first few LPs. He had a few nice mature guitar moments with Van Hagar, but I prefer his insane stratospheric hyper-speed moments of his youth anyday :thumb:

Pre-84 for me. I missed the seemingly spontaneous, live feel he had. Post 1984, his style was definitely more 'structured' to suit the change in songwriting (with the odd exception of course).
Sorta like the difference between teen-age and adulthood. He grew up, but to me he seemed to have lost the wild, sometimes unpredictable spark he possessed pre-84.
I also missed Dave's seemingly offhand, 'quickly scrawled on the back of a cigarette pack', ad libbed throwaway lyrics. |
