I like it all, but the nod would have to go to pre-84. Songs like Romeo Delight, Outta Love Again, Hang 'em High, The Full Bug, Light Up the Sky have incredible guitar work. Fair Warning LP blew my mind.

There are great post-84 songs too, like Aftershock, Seventh Seal, most anything from F.U.C.K., Humans Being also kick major ass. The main reason I would lean toward pre-84 is the overall number of great guitar songs vs. post-84.

this is a question that has multiple answers in my opinion.

LIVE:

-ed's live playing up through '81 was simply something which nothing can be compared to.

-from '82-'84 during live performances, his playing (and the singing-by all of them for that matter) seemed very sloppy. (it's a shame since we have so much live footage from them during this time). they were all fucked up by the time they got on stage on almost all shows i've seen/heard from this time.

-From '86-'95, basically all live shows kicked ass as far as performance from everyone (especially LWAN and all performances from 1995).

-Don't know about '98...havent seen much from this era.

-2004...heh.

ALBUMS:

-Up through '84 Ed's guitar work is yet again, something that nothing can be compared to.

-After '84 was pretty cool, nothing really explosive or innovative.

Pre-84 for me, as well. He had this raging fury... aggressive playing with a tone that could cut through concrete walls. If I had to narrow it down, his playing on VH1 and WACF are my favorite moments... the tone was just incredible.

Has to be post 84 for me.

Everything about V.H changed for the better after 84.

Songwriting was so much better. Not just all party, and of course Eddie's playing became more defined and less crazy.

Don't get me wrong, i still love all the pre 84 music, but i just think that when Sammy came into the frame, the quality of the music became far better. Balance, and F.U.C.K are just examples.

I've been lucky enough to see VH 38 times and other than one show (second Chicago) in 2004 - I can never ever remember seeing Edward play sloppy or off. Of course the biggest change was the 5150 tour when Edward had to come up w a whole different set of riffs, songs, etc. because the band wasn't doing any DLR stuff.

BTW the last show I saw in Milw in November 2004 - Edward was totally out there - it was all this free range stuff. The audience didn't seem to receptive, the review was terrible but I loved it because I saw Edward do and pull off moves that I'd never in all the years I've followed him and the band, do before.

Edward on a bad day - and everybody has them - is still better than 99% of anyof the other guitarists out there.

Eddie Van Halen is a genius. It doesn't matter if he's playing with Dave or Sammy or even Cherome. But we can not forget that he's human being, and all the shit that happens around him have a big influence in his music, so of course he sounds diferent depending on the vocalist.
So if you're a real Van Halen fan, you must understand this and just enjoy the music he's creating, no matter who is the lead singer.
