/> ———————

Special thanks to Danny During for providing the 1st gen cassette tapes to source for this production and to the CBG for the photos used in the artwork. This recording is also available as a CD Audio and a 24bit/96khz DVD-Audio release. Do not buy, sell or distribute for profit. Help keep alive the spirit of free trade. Please do not convert to mp3 or wma format for trading. It defeats the purpose of using high quality sources.

Production Notes:
—————–

The 1st gen tapes for the alternate audio were transfered on a modified Sony 701ES cassette deck unidirectionally and recorded at 24bit / 96khz resolution via a Terratec 6Fire audio processor. All remastering was done at the 32bit level for additional clarity before the final mixdown to 16bit / 44.1 khz for the CD Audio and 24bit / 96khz for the DVD-Audio. No hiss or noise reduction was used in the audio mastering process.

The video was sourced from the Damage Inc. Master Series DVD release. This has been acknowledged as a major visual improvement over the 1st gen video used for the original “Crazy in Detroit” release, but with inferior audio. I aligned the audience recording with the video soundtrack, which was a time consuming process when aligning two analog recordings, neither of which ran at perfect speed. I adjusted the speed of the audience recording to match the video soundtrack as closely as possible, making well over 200 adjustment points! While not perfect, the synchronization is pretty darn close.

All I did was demux the video track and then remux the new audio tracks to the original video. The video itself is unchanged and untouched, it’s still the original file as on the Damage Inc. DVD release. Now there are three sound tracks. The first is the 24 bit / 96khz audience recording, the second is the video soundtrack remixed, and the third is the original video soundtrack untouched.

One of the features not available when “Crazy in Detroit” was the Blu-Ray format which allows for higher bit rates and capacity. So this time around the show is continuous, no dvd disc break. Also, full badwidth high resolution audio tracks could be included. The draw back is the increased file size (17gb vs. 4.3gb + 3.7gb).

Another benefit of the Blu-Ray format is that I can also include the 24/96 audience recording along with the 16/44.1 cd version that was part of the original “Crazy in Detroit” release.

This was just a simple project to update an old release from 9+ years ago for some friends. No disrespect was intended to Damage Inc. and their release.

CBG5150 Notes:
——————

When I noticed, and I don’t know how I missed this upload, that Rockphantom uploaded this show on 2011-09-24, I took Rockphantom’s comments to heart. They were:

“The video quality of this release is superior to the 2005 “Crazy In Detroit” 2DVD release from Digital Reproductions.
However, the Crazy In Detroit release features an alternate soundtrack which sounds much better than the original VHS audio.
Both versions of this amazing David Lee Roth/Steve Vai show have their positives and negatives.”

So I contacted DigitalDan of Digital Reproductions and asked him if he could combine both the better video and audio sources. With much appreciation, it now exists in that fashion. The reason other than the obvious, this show was the show that made me say, I need to do this. I recieved the original source back in 1986 from Pierre in Montreal. He traded with Otto, who I didn’t know at the time, to get the show. I ended up buying it for $30 on VHS. Pierre blew me away by seeing his list and then collecting all the great shows that he did from 1982-1986 but Otto’s “balls” to go film on the 1st level of an arena on the side close to the band as opposed to being streight on in the back of the 2nd level, really put me over the edge to try it that way. Otto exhibited alot of great qualities in his filming capability, standing and filming close on the side, being steady throughout (having a shoulder mount camera helps), he was rock steady, his ability to zoom in, zoom back then pan, then rezoom is smooth and smart. He knew what and who to film when the show required it. And his zooming was smooth. Just great filming technique. But what I liked most was as I said “his balls” to go for it and film on the side close to the show.

This show was one of those BIG city shows too, where David turns it up a notch. Like in NYC (MSG & Nassau) or New Jersey (Meadowlands) or Boston or Philly. I went to all of those BIG city shows in 1986 and wished I filmed then because David was On Fire in those shows. So was the band. The loudest autience I ever heard was Worcester Mass in 1986 at the DL Roth show. The back of my neck was tingling from that audience.

So, thanks to DigitalDan for merging the two best sources of this show together for all of our viewing and listening pleasure. And thanks to Rockphantom for posting the improved video of the show. Thanks to David Lee Roth for putting on one hell of a show in Detroit Rock “Big” City!! Lastly, thanks to Otto for inspiring me to try to do what you did so well. Enjoy the show and turn it up loud!
