My laptop only has three USB ports and I got tired of trying to figure out what to unplug and still try to make it all work, so I said fuck it one day and tried burning a disc with a USB cable with only a single plug on it. It worked just fine – so I never used the dual-plug cable again. My understanding is that the idea behind it is that it provides additional electricity to the external drive, but that it often gets enough power from just a single USB plug if the computer to which it’s plugged in can provide the required amount of power through just one plug.<br
