usually I DON”T go from FLAC to MP3, I usually go from FLAC to AAC. This is just for personal listening on my iPod, AAC gives you better sound quality than MP3

Frank, what is the file size of an AAC compared to a 320k MP3 ?

Me too, I rock 320k AACs on my iPod. File size is still comparable to 320k mp3, but the quality is better. If you open up the same song as an mp3 and as an AAC in a sound editing program that will show you the spectrum of the audio frequencies present in the files, you’ll usually see it cutoff at around 16khz in mp3s, meaning that the high frequencies are not there. But a 320k AAC encoded from a FLAC or CD, looks almost identical to the original, and the frequencies go all the way up to 22khz just like the original CD-quality file does.

Dang, I wish I could tell ya, I use to try and keep track. I don’t go all the way up to 320k, since it is for the iPod I just go to 200k (at least that’s the setting in dbPowerAmp). VBR. When I view the Frequency Analysis. 200k is really quite good and the file size is pretty decent. A small file size but not missing a lot of the frequencies. I figure since it is on the iPod I’m not necessarily in the best listening environment. Giving up a little on the frequencies to get a better file size makes sense to me. If I can find any of my old files showing the differences I’ll post again.
