While nowhere near as big as the dinosaur video Van Halen mystery that was solved earlier this year, I finally figured out what that weird video on the Live Without A Net DVD was all about.

Background: If you took the 2004 DVD of Live Without A Net and dropped it into a computer and took a look at the video files, you would have noticed a silent video that looked like it was filmed in Amsterdam, and contained a band, a bike, a boat, and a 3-wheeled-car. It had nothing to do with Van Halen, and wasn’t accessible from any of the DVD menus.

Solved: It’s scenes from the band Guster’s video called “Amsterdam”, and you can see that video here:

How did I solve it? Well, I had help from Warner Music Group. Back in 2017, Jonbl5150 (don’t know who that is) posted the silent video on Youtube. I linked to that video when I posted in a movie forum asking anyone for help in identifying it. No-one helped. But the recent anniversary of the filming of LWAN got me to thinking about it again, so I went back to that post I made, and clicked the link to Youtube to watch the video again. Well, it wasn’t there. Warner had it pulled on a copyright claim.

But you can see that they left behind a breadcrumb that linked to the Guster video.

unchainedheart: exactly what i thought

I doubt it was intentional. Someone probably rendered the Guster video just before, or just after LWAN, and didn’t clean things up before delivering the LWAN files to the DVD mastering house.

I’m just glad I can once again sleep easy at night without that video mystery hanging over my head!

I recently ripped the DVD to grab a couple of tunes for a comp DVD I was making of my favorite Hagar era tunes. One of the programs I was using didn’t like the fact that the Guster video didn’t have sound. I had to use something else to make the initial cuts. It just didn’t make any sense to me at the time. It still doesn’t.
