Very cool video. That one would be good for a compilation dvd. TWILY song isn’t one of my favorite songs from the Cherone era and Malloy’s version doesn’t do anything for me either. As a matter of fact, I agree with Mitch that it wouldn’t have worked after the Dave appearance on MTV. He doesn’t sound bad, but it sounds really close to what they got out of Gary. And that obviously didn’t work. What a story he gets to tell though. I’d give a nut to be able to just hang with those guys in the studio. He got invited to join the band. Awesome! I agree, I like him on Panama as well. He would have done a good job on the catalog songs, mixing the two previous eras like Gary did.

I just thought, if Mitch’s story is true, then Dave was right back in ’96 when said, “Then, a series of events last week led me to discover at about the same time the press did, that the band, along with their manager, had already hired another lead singer, possibly as long as three months ago. I wonder how he felt the night of the MTV Awards. It certainly explains why on that night Edward looked as uncomfortable as a man who just signed a deal with the Devil. I can’t think of a reason Edward would lie to me about being considered for the lead singer when he had already hired someone, and then let me appear on MTV under the impression that there was great likelihood that Van Halen and I were reuniting. As I said, I told him in no uncertain terms that I didn’t want to do the MTV gig as a band unless we were, in fact, a band.”

I do believe MTV most likely told Van Halen, “If you don’t appear with Dave, you’ll get no push from MTV on the new project.” but that doesn’t mean they told Dave this, which I feel, if they had told Dave, he wouldn’t have appeared. Interesting.

A discussion between myself and a friend about who wrote “That’s Why I Love You” resulted in some findings about that song…

Best I can figure out.

1) “Blood from a Stone” was worked up during the Best Of Volume 1 sessions with Dave. It was the 3rd song (the first two made the release), and it didn’t make the cut.

2) Mitch Malloy worked on this song during his (short) time with the band, and eventually released a demo and incomplete version called, “It’s the Right Time”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYP99FQRoks

3) This song turned into “That’s Why I Love You” during the VH III sessions with Gary Cherone, and it was originally due to be released on that CD, till it was pulled at the last minute.

4) Both Glen Ballard and Desmond Child appear to have worked on the song, as evidenced by the ASCAP listing.

It’s 1995 and I’m invited, via a phone call from Eddie, to “hang out” with the band. After an amazing time in L.A., which included Ed saying, “congratulations you’re in the band”, I’m leaving and he hands me a tape of an instrumental of the band and says, “turn this into a song”. Well, I did write that song, but never shared it with anyone out of respect for the band. But, 20 long years later, I decided that with the challenging times the world is having “It’s the Right Time” to share that uplifting song. Fans have wondered what I would sound like with Van Halen, now you will know. I hope you dig it. ROCK!
