Based on the description it must be on a DVD somewhere. The person who posted it was the kid in the video that keeps saying, “Van Halen!”

“The complete brazilian TV Special of Van Halen in 1983. I am the boy that says Hey Van Halen !! I was 19 years old and crazy for the band! They stayed in São Paulo (The Rock & Roll Capital of Brazil) for 3 concerts at Ginásio do Ibirapuera. The band was at the top of their game. It was the first time we saw a band so energetic and charismatic on stage, plus the music was unbelievable . The crowds in the concerts went bananas !! Also at the beginning of the video we have my friends Ana Bassoli and Bolivia Rock, This video concert was a birthday present from my oldest and dear friend Rosana Giampa! Those days were extra special to all of us, and we still cherish those memories!”

Wow! That was awesome – even with the cuts. The quality is not as good as the Sao Paulo vid I was asking about, but that was damn fun to watch.

It’s not too often you see Eddie doing the intro to Ice Cream Man with Dave. That was what I find the most interesting.

Based on the quality of that Sao Paulo show and the fact that it’s on YouTube, I would say it was most definitely digitized from a master source. It would be great to get a master copy in circulation. I’m sure the gurus here on the site are already making contacts.

If it was shot on video, then there would not be any HD, as shooting HD on videotape wasn’t possible when this was shot. However, if it was shot on film, then it’s possible to make an HD copy.

I would assume in 1983 this would have been 3/4″ video or Betacam? Doesn’t appear to be shot on film. I believe one of the master tapes that had the “Rape of the Vaults” footage also had part of another South American show at the end of it. The tape was partially damaged and there was some “rolling” in the picture, but it was really nice quality. I would assume they were all shot on some sort of videotape.

Sao Paulo was shot on video as it has its interlace intact, so the best quality it can ever be would be the source SD videotape master it was shot on, whatever format that was. I belive the edited version on Youtube was from a domestic format master, so most likely VHS or Betamax.

I watched the Sao Paulo show last night. The quality is awesome. Its a shame an un edited version hasnt come out. Some of the editing in it was terrible… Its a shame.

I thing I noticed about it is VH are playing in standard tuning instead of half a step down… I wonder if they used local techs or something for that tour because the Caracas show (I think) had Eddie set up on the left side of the stage too.
