Did anyone else see the shootout attempt by the Senators player last night? I’m sorry but I forgot his name. I’m not a fan of the shootout as it is, but I thought that was horrible. He kept the tip of his blade on the puck as he went down the ice and tried a spin-o-rama on Rask. I don’t think that attempt, if scored, should have been allowed. That’s the type of stuff you see at the events before the All Star Game.

I don’t have any issue with it. With all games in conference this year and so many games decided in OT/shootout where the loser gets a point, guys a desperate to get their team the extra point. It almost worked. If it did, it would have been on every major highlight reel…and he would have gotten his team the important extra point. The people who may have an issue with it are his teammates. This was in the 4th round…suppose he lost control of the puck early and never got a shot off. Then Boston comes down and scores in their attempt to win (which they did). Pretty ballsy in my opinion but I have no issue with the trickery…Look at Marek Malik for the NYR. He went between his legs to beat the Caps in the 15th round in ’06. Anyone complain about that? No, because it went in.

I guess I was a bit bothered by the fact that he did not move the puck like they normally do. He kept it on the tip of his stick instead of the usual puck handling.

I thought the rule states you have to move the puck forward at all times during a shoot out attempt. When he did that spin, he clearly moved the puck backwards. I think that even if it had gone in – it would have been disallowed.

Randy is right, the only problem I had with it was the lack of continuous forward motion.

84.4 Shootout – During regular-season games, if the game remains tied at the end of the five (5) minute overtime period, the teams will proceed to a shootout. The rules governing the shootout shall be the same as those listed under Rule 24 – Penalty Shot.
Rule 24
24.2 Procedure – The Referee shall ask to have announced over the public address system the name of the player designated by him or selected by the team entitled to take the shot (as appropriate). He shall then place the puck on the center face-off spot and the player taking the shot will, on the instruction of the Referee (by blowing his whistle), play the puck from there and shall attempt to score on the goalkeeper. The puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent’s goal line and once it is shot, the play shall be considered complete. No goal can be scored on a rebound of any kind (an exception being the puck off the goal post or crossbar, then the goalkeeper and then directly into the goal), and any time the puck crosses the goal line or comes to a complete stop, the shot shall be considered complete.

The lacrosse-like move whereby the puck is picked up on the blade of the stick and “whipped” into the net shall be permitted provided the puck is not raised above the height of the shoulders at any time and when released, is not carried higher than the crossbar. See also 80.1.

The spin-o-rama type move where the player completes a 360° turn as he approaches the goal, shall be permitted as this involves continuous motion.

Per the rules the puck just needs to keep moving thats all

Now 5 of the original 6 teams are all in the East. I would have put Columbus in the East instead.

Columbus is also in the East.

Off the top of my head I thought they were staying in the west. By the look of the map you posted they nailed it. I never looked at the league on a map like this. West teams must spend a hell of a lot more to travel than the eastern clubs.

That’s why it sucked so bad for Detroit and their fans all those years. Those west coast games didn’t even start until 10:30pm in Detroit.

West teams travel a hell of a lot more, I think I may have read some article on grantland.com about that, they had a chart showing total miles traveled for both eastern and western conference teams. They not only travel farther east to west but also north/south. Teams close to NY travel very few miles relatively.

Heck the teams in the east could use public transportation if they choose. I think a few of them have from time to time. I think I remember seeing that on the HBO series Penguins/Flyers 24/7 a couple years ago. I hate when the Blackhawks go out on a west coast trip. Games don’t start til 9:30 our time. Oh well it still beats the hell out of watchin the NBA or MLB!
