mrmojohalen: Hey Rob,

The remaster is excellent. What is Super ANRS ?

Also, how many times has the original recording deck been serviced over the years ?

Super ANRS was a Better noise reduction codec used by JVC recorders..first they had ANRS then came Super ANRS .it WAS supposed to be compatible with dolby B but I have masters made with the JVC and with a SONY TCK-81 machine and I can tell the difference…the JVC recorders also had a setting for Ferri-Chrome tape Bias which was different than chrome..I should have mentioned that the 2nd half of this show is on the “Ferri-Chrome” format..that is why it sounds slightly different, and has a lower S/N ratio than chrome bias…I found Glenn’s JVC machine sitting in a storage cabinet a few years ago and talked him into letting me transfer all of his collection to DCC or DAT..at that time I replaced all of the belts and serviced the deck, and put it away after I did his whole collection..he stopped using the JVC when he bought a Sony TCD-5M around 1980 or 81….VIVA Super ANRS and Ferri-Chrome..JVC..Electro-Voice…

Comparing this to the lossless 1st gen recording released in late 2004 is difficult. Hard to tell what has been changed because the recording is lossy, verses what has been changed because of the remastering. The 2004 release is a lot more “airy”.

This version, while perfectly maintaining that ‘outdoor’ sound, is decidedly more up close and personal…this is a true remaster! GREAT job!

I have only heard this on a YT channel, which sounded terrible and was wasted with W & F…but you mention the “outdoor sound” which is “dry.” I assume you mean the other remaster is processed with “ambience” or compressed. Any other “Remasters” or “UpGrades” would at best be from a 1st gen analog cassette. I am the only one who transferred all of these shows straight to 1st gen digital formats…and I prefer the Dry outdoor sound….that’s why people thought this was a S.B. not Audience. Anyway thanks for the comment!

I noticed on another boot from ’78 that they really stretched things out on YRGM – it definitely wasn’t the 2 minute 38 second radio version.

I think they stretched the Kinks cover longer as time went along..Fresno 78 is longer..79 is longer still….FYI
Glenn recorded the KINKS in oklahoma city at the Myriad on August 1st 1978..and one of the orighnal tapes of the KINKS has The VanHalen Show on the other side
