‘Dave’s Old Interview Tapes’ revisits conversations with Roth, Hagar
David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar talk about enduring music and festering conflicts in the Season One finale of the “Dave’s Old Interview Tapes” podcast.
Roth and Hagar reached the apex of hard-rock popularity when singing in Van Halen, and each vocalist served multiple stints in the band: Roth from 1974 to 1985, briefly in 1996 and 2007 to present; Hagar from 1986 to 1996 and 2003 to 2005.
“Dave’s Old Interview Tapes” revisits IndyStar musical conversations between 1998 and 2004, meaning Hagar’s 1999 interview and Roth’s 2002 interview happened when the singers weren’t members of Van Halen.
“I should have quit the band after the end of the ‘Balance’ tour (1995), and just shook hands and said ‘OK, we’ve done it, folks,’ ” Hagar said. ” ‘We ain’t going to get any better. We’re not going to start writing better songs. We ain’t going to get happier. We’re going to start getting unhappy and start fighting.’ Because that’s what happened.”
Roth talks in 2002 about waiting for a reunion call from guitarist Eddie Van Halen.
“Eddie Van Halen is guilty of only one crime in his life: wasted time,” Roth said. “How important is a second? Ask the guy who almost had a traffic accident. How important is a millisecond? Ask the little girl who just won a silver medal? I hung on for many summers, thinking, ‘Ah, this is going to come around.’ ”
